Based on the clips I'd seen and interviews with the main cast I went with high expectations, they managed to exceed them. Thought the old and new bits were mixed together brilliantly. It captured the whole idea of ageing, realising that your best years are behind you, wondering what to do and not knowing. I actually found a lot of it very poignant and moving, especially the scenes with Soud, who was always the most sympathetic character in the film and novel. For all that it's not a gloom fest, it's very funny in places. The Loyalist pub scene kind of spills into caper territory but it was pretty funny.I thought all the main actors were excellent, if anything Bremner, Miller and Carlyle overshadow McGregor.
