It seems we are going down the route of piss poor upfront money with the promise of more to come in add ons and sell on fees.

Looks like it could come to fruition with John McGinn and I suppose if Mallan does well with Barnsley the sell on fee could be lucrative.

Hard to escape the initial feeling that it's too low though. During the 90s we sold guys like Lavety and Ricky Gillies for more than that.

I'd like to think that if he performs as well for Barnsley as he did for us, the amount they eventually sell him on for will see us cut a bigger chunk than the initial outlay....substantially so.

Would have loved us to have got him but we can't compete with the English Championship. Looks like a good move for him.

No harm to Hibs, as we're relying on you to maximise profit on John McGinn when he eventually does go but if it's future percentage of sell on fees we're looking to negotiate, the lesser lights of the Championship in England, where they're likely to play regularly is where we want our youngsters going, not the Scottish Premiership. No one would even bat an eyelid if Mallan done moderately well down there and got a multi-million pound move in two years. Look at the type of fees players like Dorrans, Snodgrass and Ross McCormack have pulled in.

Yep getting the sell on percentage is the way to imo.

Was resigned to losing him but expected more than £200k. Let's hope jack gets the lot - don't see why he shouldn't?

Sky sports reporting that the bid is £300k plus add ons and a sell on.

So Barnsley actually emailed Div with the transfer offer thinking he was the football club because he owns the domain name www.stmirren.co.uk .

This is why football clubs should stick to faxes!

Sell on fees can be hit or miss unfortunately as are appearance based bonuses. We've lost out on more money for the likes of Arfield and McGrandles as they moved on fot nowt although at least we got 500k up front for the latter. Others like Kingsley have seen money continue to come in on top of the 350k initial fee. U win some u lose some. 2-300k seems a wee bit low unless you needed to sell obviously to cover some losses otherwise why the rush? How long was left on his contract?

Funny looking back, the last time we struggled at the bottom of this division we were down in a scrap with Raith and Ayr, the both of them got relegated and we kicked on under Gus. Finished 2nd the next season and won the title a year later, where as Ayr never really recovered from that relegation and Raith only recently came back into this division.

All very fine margins. Let's hope we aren't in a similar position any time soon, although history repeating itself with a promotion to the top league would be nice.

Also looking at that yesterday, thank fck we avoided the lottery of the play offs. Everyone assumes the bigger team will be ok. Football is a weird old game.

Mallan is out of contract next summer. The deal with Barnsley fell through in January, can only assume the club made a promise to him we'd sell him this summer if they came in with another bid.

As for fees, he's only worth what someone will pay for him. Its enough for us to say he's worth 500k without any real knowledge of the transfer market.

.

I enjoy a good kicking of the wee team more than most, they've been in this division since about 2009 though? That's a decent innings.

Really? Time flies [emoji23]. Fair dos, lost track of goings on in this division for a while.

They did toil in the 2nd division for a number of years though.
