Post Split 2016

Recommended Posts

A wee bit to go yet, but it'll be interesting to see what farce the split brings this year.

Expect more delays to the release of the fixtures and at least one club to be unhappy.

Aberdeen are due 3 home games - which going by the current Top 6 should mean

Celtic A

St Johnstone A

Ross County H

Hearts H

Motherwell H

If Dundee make the Top 6 then we might end up with 3 home or away to Dundee and Saints.

Haven't looked at the top 6, but looked at potential bottom 6 yesterday (as it's more likely to be relevant to us).If the league finishes as is then the only change that needs to be made is Dundee to come to Firhill a 3rd time. Everyone ends up with 19 home and away games.

If Dundee replace Motherwell in the top 6 then it gets messy and I can't see a way to get all the fixtures to balance.

Just spent about 10 mins of my Monday afternoon calculating this so please appreciate my efforts...

Going by the table rn and fixtures to come, I think the battle for 6th will involve Well + Dundee.

So going by the fixtures we've played (and yes, ik this won't be the way the SPFL cronies will base their decisions on), we'll be due 3 home/2 away games if Motherwell finish 7th. If Dundee finish 7th, then we'll be due 2 home/3 away games.

If Well finish 7th :

  • Partick (H)
  • Hamilton (A)
  • Dundee Utd (H)
  • Motherwell (H)
  • ICT (A)

If Dundee finish 7th :

  • Partick (H)
  • Hamilton (A)
  • Dundee Utd (H)
  • Dundee (A)
  • ICT (A)

That's the logical process but I guarantee that will not be the final fixtures... :thumbsdown

Due 3 home games after the split: Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts, Dundee, Partick Thistle, Inverness CT.

Due 3 away games after the split: St Johnstone, Ross County, Motherwell, Hamilton, Kilmarnock, Dundee United.

Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts are guaranteed to finish in the top 6, so if Dundee, Partick Thistle and/or Inverness also finish in the top half there is guaranteed to be an imbalance of home/away fixtures.

We are due 3 home games.

If Motherwell finish top six then either them, Aberdeen or St Johnstone will have to play an extra game at Tynecastle.

Would be surprised if Aberdeen had to go to Tynecastle 3 times. Then again...

Saints will have played 17 home/16 away by the split, if things stay as they are we will be due to play Celtic, Hearts, and Aberdeen at home, and Motherwell and Ross County away.

Celtic came to Perth 3 times last season so Saints may get to enjoy the delights of a third trip to Parkhead

There are too many variables right now to predict the fixtures but the rules the SP(F)L have used have generally been consistent.

1. Every team plays at least 2 home and 2 away post split.

2. If It is possible for every team to play 19h 19a then the fixtures will produce that

3. A minimum number of changes to the expected fixtures is preferred

So if the top 6 finishes like it is then Motherwell will have perfect fixtures.

Home: Hearts, St Johnstone

Away: Celtic, Aberdeen, Ross County

That would make it unlikely that our fixtures would be changed since it would require two changes to rebalance home and aways but you can't tell without looking at every club.

Useful list for reference if they have fixture imbalances. They will try to give uneven splits to teams that have benefited or been hindered in the past. For example, Killie or Motherwell would be candidates for a 20/18 and Aberdeen for an 18/20, although obviously that would cause a fuss this season!

Do think it's too early to be taking anything for granted regarding halves though.

20/18 Splits

3 occasions:

  • Aberdeen (05/06, 07/08, 09/10)
1 occasion:
  • St Johnstone (01/02)
  • ICT (04/05)
  • Falkirk (06/07)
  • Killie (11/12)
  • Hibernian (13/14)
  • Dundee (14/15)
18/20 Splits

2 occasions:

  • Aberdeen (04/05, 13/14)
  • Killie (06/07, 14/15)
1 occasion:
  • Livingston (01/02)
  • ICT (05/06)
  • Gretna (07/08)
  • Motherwell (09/10)
  • St Johnstone (11/12)

Except in 2007-08, of course.

With home games costing Gretna more money than aways, they received 4 A in a row, then Hearts (biggest support in Bottom 6) at H...!!

Outlier situations like Gretna is why the actual rules of how the split games are worked out will never be published. Better to keep as much flexibility as possible

Funny how neither of the twisted sisters have been impacted
