Benjamin_Nevis
Debts incurred through fraud, eg fiddling the leccy meter or scamming benefits usually can't go into a bankruptcy ETA: Might go down the routes of Attachments etc. Wonder if she's daft enough to put her assets into her partner's name Edited November 15, 2022 by Day of the Lords

Well, she's apparently useless with money, and her partner's a Tory - I'll be shocked if he hasn't made sure everything of value's in his name.

Doing that just counts as a tainted gift and can still be seized and sold. Bankruptcy is also no issue, as the crown can freeze all assets and get its pay out first before the other creditors.

ICTChris
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-64876280 Quote from the judge Quote the defence is very anxious to draw a line under this case as soon as possible. September 2016 she was charged. Allegations surfaced in late 2015. Seven and a half years down the line and still a fairly straightforward embezzlement hasn't been fully resolved. I am sure this is the reality too for some people that are much lower-profile than a disgraced MP, but it shows the justice system in a terrible light to have things like this being dragged out for years. It's pathetic, frankly.

I'm not sure how a justice system can give due safeguards to the innocent while at the same time denying them to deluded sad cases.

It took about 18 months to get her into court after she was charged and almost another year after that for her trial to actually start. Her conviction was quashed at the end of 2019 and it took until April 2022 to give her a retrial, where she was eventually found guilty. Appeals will naturally elongate the process, but two and a half years for her trial to actually start after being charged and the same again for her retrial is piss poor.

Covid obviously played a part in the delay, but in my limited experience the justice system has always been horrendously slow, in England too.
