As I recall, Napoleon didn't have much luck going to war with Russia and neither did Hitler.

Oh well, maybe we can try our luck and distract attention away from our clumsy Brexit negotiations.

Nobody will suspect a thing.

Oh and if Spain gets awkward about Gibraltar, we will go to war with them as well.

That should liven things up.

It's rhetoric like this that should worry anyone.  This is obviously complete and utter horseshit.  It's the British defence secretary clearly lying through his teeth to make people scared of big bad Russia.

Only an idiot would believe pish like this,  but unfortunately most people are idiots (brexit, no, Tory government)

Why are they doing this sort of stuff?  They're building a case to attack Russia and present it to us as a defensive war. Same with the'interfering' in the US election stuff, it's all connected.

The guy was a double/triple agent so a shady chunt, probably made enemies on both sides.  Seems a bit o a botched job to boot. The media coverage and the response has been overkill, trying to make it a bigger story than it really should be. Flexing the Empires puny muscles. Probably the ghost of the MI6 escapolagist that padlocked himself in a holdall did it.

There will never be a hot war with Russia. There are far too many oligarchical and economic links between them - neither side wants that and they know it.

What is happening is the buildup to Cold War II - which was potentially already begun.

Big bad foreign boogeyman with advanced military technology is great news for arms dealers.

Also allows them to declare any non-establishment political movement as Russian subversion. That's why we hear far more about Russian twitter bots, which were dwarfed in scale by bots controlled by prominent Hillary supporters, and a lot less about the genuine mutual connections between Trump and Putin.

What do NATO or Britain have to gain from a war with the Russian Empire? I'd have thought you'd have more sympathy for the wee countries that struggled to get independence from it and are now under low to high level attack.

This is a good and insightful post. And the influence of the military industrial intelligence complex is no doubt a factor but I think they've won that war already and the permanent build-up of arms will continue unabated anyway.  The profit itself is enough of a motive.

However, many strategists have always believed a conflict with Russia was inevitable at some point from 1945 onwards and imo we are closer to that point than ever.  I think our leaders clearly want to manufacture conflict with Russia and have been actively doing so for years.

I don't think it was botched, the method chosen was deliberately to make a public statement. Like the polonium one. And the killer/s have probably got away. The only question is who ordered it. The simple answer is usually right, in both cases the victims were ex-FSB officers who had betrayed their country/Putin, in the first case he was publicly threatening to divulge more. A public warning to others and a boost to Putin's strongman reputation at home. With no sign of severe sanctions going away what has he got to fear from the West?

Global hegemony and the triumph of the neo liberal capitalist ideology, same as it's always been.  None of this stopped when the USSR was dissolved it just settled down for a wee while.

What a public statement like 'we're shit at this given a week later they're both still alive when we could have just shot them'.

The best part about the Red menace resurfacing is the sincere belief from libs that a bunch of low paid trolls and bot accounts with a broken grasp of English had a more effective campaigning strategy than the Clintonite Democratic apparatus.

If they wanted to make a statement they could have put some polonium in Joe Harts head n shoulders to rule him out of going to the world cup....hold on...I see a flaw in that.

Like the polonium guy. If he'd been shot it would barely have been in the news.

Many of the biggest pushers of the Russian social media interference narrative (Eric Garland and Sally Albright) are frequently retweeted by large quantities of bots.

I'd say that was more the case for the US than it is for us.

The US military budget is a greater percentage of the overall budget and gets large increases all the time.

The US also has the huge amount of military aid that it gives Israel which also gets frequent large increases. Much of that money goes to American arms companies straight away.

Our military budget has remained consistently lower than that of the US for decades. In fact it is more likely to be marginally cut than increased. That means significantly more competition for British arms companies. They do export huge amounts however they are restricted in what technologies they can sell abroad.

Eric Garland is a fucking legend. Still remember him responding to someone praising his “good work” boasting that he was tweeting on adderall and booze home alone like that isn’t fucking depressing.
