The James McClean Sponsored Poppy Thread

Recommended Posts

What about the charities that give you a wee sticker after you donate to show your support, do you tell them to eff off as you're not a narcissist and you've done your bit? These emblems and stickers all help promote their causes, and I'm more than happy to wear them.

It's so you don't get pestered round the corner by the next one.

I saw a knuckledragger in the chippy the other night that had a really tacky 'last we forget' tattoo with 2 poppy tattoos either sie of it. It  was on his forearm, I guess so it could always be on show.  That struck me as somebody using a poppy emblem as a part of their identity in a tribal way the same way people get football badge tattoos.

And you're point is?

'Your' not 'You're'  It was just an observation on how the poppy emblem has been appropriated.

I must apologise for not proof reading my phones predictive text like I usually do. It just seemed you were judging and looking down YOUR nose at him with your choice of words.

Start of MOTD announced that since there won't be games on the weekend of Remembrance Sunday all clubs at home today (and presumably tomorrow) had garish poppy displays (the West Ham looked particularly w**k) and a minute's silence. Prety sure most, of not all, Scottish games had at least a minute's silence today, as well as the usual huge stupid poppy on the strip.

Does this not defeat the purpose of Remembrance Sunday? And why do clubs have to do something today if they aren't at home on the weekend in question? They don't of course, but they need to be seen to be doing it or they'll get hugely adverse publicity as a result of the braindead sobbing out what little IQ points they have in a wee dickhead rage.

I'd argue that clubs shouldn't really do anything around the whole issue as there are loads of services on the day for those who want to do something. As pointed out it should be a solemn thing, not some gaudy public display. Plus football is supposed to be something that helps you forget your troubles

You are spot on.  I saw the tattoo and thought he was a wallpaper.

Fair enough...I'm way too quick to judge folk sometimes too.

A wallpaper?

Not so. I give to charity every day, whether through buckets or dropping my change into the can at the till and I also have a donation set up through my wages. The only ones I do back from are the ones who want you to set up a DD at the shop front or on the street.

Walking down Ayr high street yesterday was the worst ever. Five different chuggers tried to engage me in conversation.....so bloody annoying!! Like i've said, I have a couple of standing orders set up for charities but it gets a bit much when every time i'm in Morrisons there is someone rattling a can at the door trying to make you feel guilty.

My solution to this is to tell them that the amount I donate already is the maximum I can afford.

I then list the charities to which I donate and ask them to choose which one I should replace with their charity.

I have had some actually choose to replace another charity.

"Cancer is more important than animals" was my favourite response.

Fair play to you bud but I have no intention of wasting a second of my life engaging with these roasters.

While I largely agree with you that football doesn't need to push the boat out 'poppy-wise' and the OTT razzmatazz is a bit cringey, so is your attitude about the few minutes out your life that it takes. What's with the 'tear stained' (c P & B) rant about anyone who does feel the need for the public demonstration. As I've alluded to before, do you get a good 'rant on' about Children in Need ? That's pushed pretty hard and there are plenty of enthusiastic types getting in your face about that too.

At the Hibs game yesterday there was no minutes silence and quite a few folk around me commented on it, I didn't feel the need for it myself but each to their own.

I don’t donate much/ever to cancer research really as if you cure cancer something else will assume primary responsibility for killing off the population in a horrific way- Alzheimer’s etc. We can’t live forever so I would rather donate to Marie cutie or the hospice - those that deliver palliative care.

However, I totally agree that something which impacts on humans is more important than what happens to an animal.
