The council elections are the perfect system for the Britnats to chip in to try and keep one of their gormless losers in a seat - their policies are indistinguishable by now anyway.

Needless to say that it won't matter in any area where The Only Show In Town is rocking home with more than half of the vote though. A shoeing awaits in the Central Belt for the Britnats, but they'll likely make some gains in teuchter country.

There does seem to be an inordinate amount of hardcore BritNats in the north. My suspicion is that they make great play of being "one nation British" because recognising Scotland as a nation within the UK would mean admitting they're from the second-tier nation, and an often-overlooked corner of one at that. One sees this in the likes of Fox, Gove and Harris too - they all strive to be more vocally British than their counterpart Brexiters from England, almost as if they have an inferiority complex about being born in Scotland that trumpeting "Britishness" and a single British nation and identity effaces.

Local issues could well have been more in play than  the Independence issue. It makes no difference to the Council anyway which is run by independents.

Lib Dem landslide on the way apparently, Willie Rennie preparing for government:

Wow! Lib Dem GAIN from Labour in #Culloden & #Ardersier By-Election. From fourth to win with Trish Robertson. Stunning!

Must be scary swings to the Tories in both those seats that saw big 1st pref SNP votes in previous elections.

Aberdeenshire Council Tweeted these figures, presumably 1st preferences:

Inverurie:

LD 755; SNP 1164, Tory 1302, Lab 139

Banff:

LD 526; SNP 962, Tory 1170

Inverurie (Aberdeenshire) result: CON: 38.8% (+21.4) SNP: 34.6% (-2.5) LDEM: 22.5% (+5.1) LAB: 4.1% (-9.1) GRN & two INDs stood previously.

Banff & District (Aberdeenshire) result: CON: 44.0% (+20.9) SNP: 36.2% (-19.2) LDEM: 19.8% (+8.7)

I guess the fishermen are not happy with the SNP for being pro-EU?
