She wont

Perfect scenario then, the SNP declare that they will be holding a referendum on Scottish independence in 2 years only for May to reject it. Shooting herself in the foot during the process.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. If it gets called that early, she must realise a No vote, which wouldn't exactly be unlikely, would pretty much seal our fate for a very long time. And she also must realise that an attempt to stop it would pretty much be the final nail in the union's coffin.

Neither result would be a shock if it was held next year. And I think for May, that'd have to be a risk worth taking.

Still don't think it can happen before Brexit terms are finalised, but if it does, Sept 2018 is fine for a repeat No. It won't be apathy but uncertainty that holds sway.

Perfect.  Then we can dole out the numerous examples of "look what No promised last time..."

In addition to promoting independence as a bastion of certainty in comparison to the uncertain, vascillating, deal-less UK and it's small-minded, separatist nationalism.

I don't think Nicola has any other choice but to call it for next year or at the very latest Spring 2019. What Westminster do is up to them.

But a refusal would be, as many have said, the very final nail in the coffin for the Union.

Lets see what happens when Westminster replies to the Scottish government and Article 50 is triggered next month.

There really is no sound, robust argument that No have for Scotland staying part of the UK.  They are therefore restricted to a 2 pronged attack.  Targetting people like Rob, who want Scotland to remain tethered to Westminster on entirely ideological, "romantic" grounds and outright barefaced lies.

The lies this time will be more frequent and without shame, I guarantee it.

I suspect that "too poor" will be the foundation of the argument this time - Scotland will be painted as the poor, deficit-ridden basket case, and we'll be expected not to realise that that's *under* the rule of a deficit- and debt-ridden UK. Of course, plenty of Scots will embrace this vision with open arms.

And celebrate this then say "as a proud scot"

Which is presumably a boon for unionists, who don't want Scotland to be self-governing...

Well aye, he's a hardcore unionist. Voted for Brexit as well and I suspect he's a Tory. I've tried debating independence with him but it's a waste of time, he'll never change his opinion.
