The Greenock Morton Thread - It's Better Than Yours

Are we likely to get a section of the 'Coo Shed' on our visits to Cappielow this season? It was very enjoyable last time and much better than getting your knees squashed to f**k in the main stand.

Would these be the sort of signings a team aspiring to be seaside league champions, and who currently have virtually no midfielders or full backs, should make?

Forbes is a strange one. He had an unbelievable season in 2016-2017 where he set up about 20 goals and scored 12 himself. He was contributing pretty much every game which made him a certain starter. However when the goals and assists dried up last season, he was like a man down at times as he was contributing so little and with his obvious lack of pace, we really struggled  for creativity.  Now, classic Jim Duffy played him right mid most of the time when he is naturally a centre mid but if he is not contributing then he really stood out as being so ineffective.

Very much a confidence player too, when he was on fire, he looked a completely different player. Hopefully he finds a club and rediscovers the form of 2 seasons ago. Raith would be a good fit for him.

On Doyle, absolutely fine defensively, rarely made mistakes, can tackle, good pace and positioning etc, he has all the attributes to be a good right back. However going forward, he got a nose bleed crossing the half way line. Struggled to cross a ball, beat a man etc and if you want your fullbacks to be attacking, he is not the answer.  Good guy and wish him all the best, but if we want to challenge, we need a more all round full back who can add a bit more going forward  than what Doyle could. Again, he would be a good signing for you.

That doesn't give any indication whether he has been spoken to by McKinnon or not. Someone on the Morton forum said that McKinnon was sitting down with all the goalkeepers on Monday, but given Brennan has already been released I doubt that story.

If you click into the convo, he says,

"No I haven’t heard anything yet from Morton. Hoping to get something sorted this week one way or another"

That was last night.

IIRC you were moved because your fans had a wee reputation for being fond of pyro, so the club didn't want you burning the main stand down. Make the same threats and you should be fine.

Ahh, I didn't click into the replies.

I'm not overly fussed either way with Gaston. We do need an upgrade in that position if we're being ambitious, and he's probably costing us too much to be a second choice, but he's a decent enough goalkeeper at this level. If

Only if you're one of those oddities that goes to an away game and sits down chief.

The stewards at Morton aren’t the best from memory in terms of letting people stand. Pretty sure it kicked off a bit last time with people being made to sit down/getting chucked out.

At the last game we played at Cappielow both were open. I think it was the first time Morton had used that advertising segregation thingy.

Hopefully that contact comes today/tomorrow as would be a big blow to lose him!

If the club is serious about mounting a promotion challenge then we shouldn't view that as a big blow at all. Gaston is certainly a solid enough keeper at this level but does he really excel at his  job? I didn't see too many signs of that last season in another hit and miss campaign tbh. If McKinnon has his eye on a quality goalkeeper elsewhere then we will have to be absolutely ruthless about this: there'll only be room for one first-choice goalkeeper and some ringer as back-up.

Don’t you feel any sense of shame when you refer to someone else’s “job”? It’s not as if you’ve ever had one to excel at.

Fake news, much like the twenty fictional posts that you've claimed to hold during your tragic, Walter Mitty episodes.

Get back in your box then.

What job are you claiming to have held then? A Lost Voice Guy Tribute Act?

It must be difficult for the CEO of Endemol and chief tax advisor to HMRC to grasp that nobody else tries to make up utterly fictitious posts in a gormless bid to seem authoritative on the Internet.

You seem to have difficulty acknowledging talent Stevie boy.

Gaston’s save in the away game to Stranraer was pivotal to our win there and he has made a number of outstanding contributions. The idea that we should bin him and bring in a two bob amateur as back up to the most injury prone position in a team is typical of your desire to kvetch about players rather than use reasoned analysis.

What was that job of yours?

That was in 2015 in a different lower division; we're not keeping Jamie McCluskey around at the club for his contribution in the final weeks of that campaign. Over the past few seasons Gaston has been a bang-average goalkeeper at this level who has won the team many points but cost it quite a few as well.

So despite trying to berate the board for a lack of ambition it turns out that you're the one who wants to cling on to mediocre players for the sake of the past and sentimentality, when the club is actually in the business of mounting a promotion challenge now.  Just as well you'll never get on the board, despite being chairman of the CBI and all.

Except that there's no actual evidence to show that the goalkeeper role is 'the most injury prone position' and we wouldn't actually be binning Gaston for 'a two bob amateur'. We'd be replacing a mediocre championship goalkeeper with a better one and having the same degree of back-up that most clubs have at this level. Which is entirely logical given both the club's resources and the ease by which clubs can secure an emergency goalkeeper if a serious injury occurs.

The idea that we should or even could keep Gaston at the club as back-up is laughable nonsense. If McKinnon can find a better option then he should be thanked for his services and moved on.

That's absolutely none of your business champ. Thanks for playing anyway.
