The Greenock Morton Thread - It's Better Than Yours

Recommended Posts

Did he not sign a two year extension on the Monday after we beat St. Mirren 4-1 back in August?

He did, although it wasn't a direct result of the St Mirren game, the contract had been on the table and agreed for weeks, he just finally signed it on that day (allegedly).

Had they offered a contract extension on the back of one good win, it would have been preposterous.

But handing a new contract before that, on the back of our capitulation at the end of the previous season and our abject failure of a League Cup performance was BAT SHIT FUCKING CRAZY!

There was no need for it, it's not as if anyone was likely to try to prise him away (maybe they took Chic Young touting him for the Scotland job seriously!)

I would love to think the BOD will get their just rewards by now having to pay him off when they sack him at the end of the season (won't happen though, they fucking love him and are too stupid to see his failings).

Unfortunately, it was just the next in a long line of ridiculous decisions from them in charge.

He's not.  It's just what Morton fans do. Make up their minds after a couple of games and stick with that opinion even if it's wrong.

Hold the ball up to bring midfielders into play; win the ball in the air from crosses or balls from the back; provide a pace threat in behind the opposition defence. If you can do all three then you certainly won't be at this level for long, but Baird offers none of the above. His running about a lot doesn't actually constitutes effective pressing of the opposition either.

The best that you can say for Baird is that his finishing and movement in the penalty box has in practice been an upgrade on McHugh. That's not enough to merit a start in such a workmanlike team though and both of them should be binned at the soonest possible opportunity.

Duffy got that extension on the back of 12 league games without a win. It beggars belief.

On Baird, you can look at the stats alone and on the face of it three goals in eight appearances (six starts) is a really good contribution. It certainly puts McHugh's record to shame. It ignores the context though.

For starters, two of those goals were against Brechin. Yes, you can only beat what's in front of you and shamefully we're one of the sides who have dropped points to them this season, but let's not pretend that being capable of scoring against Brechin is any indication of ability to play against proper Championship sides.

His goal against Dumbarton was a superb finish, so credit where it's due there. When a centre forward is scoring you quite rightly turn a blind eye to their failure to contribute anything else. However, you can't do that in his other appearances. Livingston at home, Falkirk away, Dundee United at home, Queen of the South at home - he was absolutely hopeless in all of these games and there was nothing to make up for the lack of goals. Like McHugh he's a player who can contribute absolutely nothing other than goals which is great if he's actually scoring, but he's not good enough to score against anyone but the relegation fodder. He works hard, but his tearing about like a headless chicken approach - in contrast to the intelligent pressing which we see when Quitongo and Oliver play together - isn't enough to make up for a lack of ability. He doesn't offer enough in holding the ball up, physical presence, intelligent movement, pressing or any other aspect of his all round play. Overall you'd have to say he's been considerably better than McHugh, but if we have aspirations of challenging for the playoffs again rather than slumping to another seventh place finish miles away from fourth we need far better than Baird.

I'd also add that while this isn't Baird's fault at all, his signing coincided with our season going to shit as Duffy was determined to shoehorn him into the team and sacrificed Frank Ross to do so, destroying the balance of the team and even reinstating the 4-3-3 so he could accommodate him. That's 100% on Duffy's head and you can't blame Baird for it, but it's a warning about what we can expect if he's here next season and another reason not to sign him.

For me Duffy's biggest failing this season was not getting any quality wide players in at the start of the season. To wait until the January transfer window to bring in Frank Ross done more damage to our play off aspirations than anything.

We could have had more points on the board in the first half of the season which would probably have been enough to secure our place in the top 4.

Robert Thomson scored 13 or 14 goals last season with Dumbarton. That tells it's own story  this season of our team failing to break down defences and put quality balls into the box for our strikers.

He did. On the back of a terrible run of results including the previous season. F*** knows why the Board/Rae thought it was worthwhile giving him another deal at that point.

Because he is a yes man to the board

Is Quitongo still under contract for next season?

No he signed a one year deal 12 months ago. Don’t know what will happen. Obviously  I’d love to keep him as he is easily by far the best player in the squad right now and he puts so much fear into the opposition it’s like playing with a man down when he doesn’t play. Not sure if other clubs will take a chance on someone so injury prone, which is a shame for him as his talent is there for everyone to see.

You've got the cheek to complain about playing on our pitch too. Think your groundsman has a lot of work to do!
