Women's World Cup

Ivory Coast looked like they were playing their first ever game of football.

Some of the better players are quite skillful but they lack the physical power and pace to get anywhere near male professionals. Reckon even a Montrose or someone like that could bet the best women's teams.

Anyway, someone tell me when Sweden play cos I want to see Amanda Ilestedt in shorts.

Well that was an enjoyable 90 minutes, even if it was too much like watching Rangers vs Rangers at times. Anyway, here's my first attempt at a reporting format:

Entertainment value: 8/10. Three cracking goals from Nigeria. A real ding dong but 3 each was pretty fair.

The Bilel Mohsni award for ‘special defending’: Oparanozie of Nigeria for putting through her own net when under little pressure.

The Cammy Bell goalkeeping medal: Dede of Nigeria for flapping at cross balls in the style of the master.

Flange factor: High. Appealing to all taste. Some very tidy women on both teams. Special mention for the North Korean ref who would get a right good dunt if she ever fancied some whistle-blowing down Wycombe way.

Summary: Moral high ground to Team Nigeria. More creative if a little naive.

I have watched a few games so far and the disparity between the good teams and bad is just enormous. Germany Vs. Ivory Coast being the prime example.

Germany were fairly professional and looked actually good (even compared to men's) at times. Ivory Coast on the other hand would have been beaten by a pub team.

How did Ivory Coast qualify?

I've tried watching a few games now, but it's fucking terrible. What's worse is the way all involved are talking it up (i know they have to) as if it's a fantastic spectacle.

I think i'm done with it.

The Cameroon number 22 could give you a hand, I heard that she is a long throw specialist.

Eniola Aluko claiming today that the Women's game if great and if you don't think so you are uneducated.

Sorry but they play the same game. Same ball, same pitch, same boots, same goalposts. The same opportunity to play the game at the same level but simply can't.

I don't go around telling people my daughter's ballet class is top class and that you have to judge her age group on it's own merit when I know dam well how it can look at it's top level.

But "to criticise women's football of not reaching the same heights as men's football is just an opinion which is outdated, negative and boring."
She might think so but it would be a bloody correct opinion

"there is no need for comparison"......well I think maybe you should have to justify the hours of coverage and the money spent on promoting it on the BBC when they won't pay to show us any Scotland men's games or are we not equal then

"My advice is: just judge the Women's World Cup on its own merits. If what you see is of a poor standard, then that's a different story"

,,,do you know I haven't seen one trick, one stepover, I may have seen 1 back heel. What we're seeing is absolute basic football, sometimes not done all that well, a level you can see on a Sunday morning at your local playing fields being presented to us on TV as World Class sport and if you criticise you are sexist and simply don't understand the game.

I understand fine. I understand forced equality before it's been earned and It's bloody anoying !

I think a highlights package would have been sufficient until the knock-out stages. I enjoy watching the goals but some of the general play is a bit slow and predictable. Like watching the Pars I guess. (Got that in before anybody else)

Some of the worst games of football I have ever seen have been Champions League games, some of the best have been Scottish 2nd tier. Better 'standard' of player doesn't mean a better spectacle.

I like the lack of diving in the women's game. It's not perfect but the simulation and rolling around faking injury is certainly less than the men's game.

Whilst they aren't at the standard that the men's game is, I don't care. It's not too bad to watch imo.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fitting finish in the Japan England battle for the 2nd and 4th place finishes. A honking game from 2 inept teams decided by 2 non penalties and a last second comedy own goal.

Any youngsters staying up to see that must have thought ..this is a terrible standard for a semi-final how bad are the rest?

The England "penalty" was an absolute shocker of a dive.
