The invisible DUP

THE KING

This mob will have more seats than UKIP and are no doubt ear marked to be part of a Conservitive coalition if needed, so why aren't this lots policy's being analysed as much?

A quick look at their latest ramblings show they want to introduce sectarian employment laws, they want Creationism taught in school and they are against Gay marriage,,,oh and gays are worse than child abusers and children brought up in gay marriages or more likely to be abused.

These guys could be in the next government.

That's okay though as they are good little unionist lapdogs that never get out of their box.

They are the self-styled "Party of Northern Ireland". No wonder the place is fucked.

This.

Mark Steel touched upon these loonies in the Independent. What a bunch of cranks...

But at least we can be certain that after the election, the Conservatives will never seek a deal with other parties to stay in power. For example, the Democratic Unionist Party is likely to have eight MPs, who may be crucial in forming a government. Among their reasonable and measured policies is that homosexuality is a sin, and one of their councillors claimed hurricanes are God’s revenge for the “filthy practice of sodomy”.

Their culture minister, Nelson McCausland, made a complaint about the sign that greets tourists at the rock formation known as the Giant’s Causeway, for stating it’s the result of a geological process. This was clearly incorrect, he insisted, as the earth is only 4,000 years old and the Giant’s Causeway was made that way by God.

Giant's Causeway made by god!

The likely lack of influence of the DUP in terms of government does not mean they should be allowed to fly below the radar during an election campaign. There is huge scrutiny of the SNP throughout the UK because there may be a block of SNP MPs trying to promote various positions; why the stunning silence about the DUP?

Maybe it's because it would require the sort of genuine self examinations of the beloved United Kingdom that many in power do not want to see.

It would be a huge embarrassment for this modern, pluralist democracy to admit that in 2015 there's a wee corner dominated by homophobic, sectarian, sky fairy zoomers who continue to hold power through a process of religious division.

Best ignore that and just concentrate on the most dangerous woman in Britain.

This. While all I've seen recently on the DUP is the creationist, homophobic stuff repeated here, it's wildly irresponsible of the media not to say "hang on, we've still got some kind of duty to inform the populace about this", and run the occasional piece showing the type of people who may well be the Tories' ticket to finishing the country off.

I don't think that arguing about the failed statelet on a football message board is going to result in any productive outcomes. Suffice to say it's always been the red-headed stepchild, and if it's ever to modernise then it's going to be the people of Norn Iron who do it rather than their two primary competing external interests.

As with the hysteria over the SNP, it matters not where they are based. This election is about the future of the UK, and the policies of the parties involved.

Surely the possibility that people who believe in creationism and hold deeply homophobic opinions may have a say in the running of the UK is worthy of a teeny, tiny little soupçon more coverage than its currently being aired them?

Hilarious.

I'm just curious as to how they are allowed to run for election then decline to do it once they win the vote. Not being paid for not doing the job is fine, but they are preventing others (who would actually turn up at the HoC) from getting employment.

The alternative would be what, exactly? Ankle bracelets to force them to attend Parliament?

Declining to take their seats is their democratic right, and indeed generations of the electorate have supported that. On the other hand, SF had some fucking cheek to turn around the other week and state that they were opposed to the UK government's austerity policy.
