The Great Big Kilmarnock Thread

Recommended Posts

Tbh Rugby Park is too big for us!! We only ever fill it on Derby Days and when a team wins the title there!! 18,128 is too much for us when our average is 5,000 odd I think!! 10,000/12,000 would be better and we could easily build a ground that looks better... My opinion but would like to see what everyone else thinks

Of course 18k+ is too much for Kilmarnock nowadays. However, it's not like the stadium was built when we were getting a few thousand through the gates. We were getting pretty incredible crowds (certainly in comparison to this day & age) and with Scottish football in a relative 'boom period' it made sense to speculate in order to accumulate. With hindsight, that was a bad decision.

As for a new stadium? It seems (Killie) pie in the sky. The only way that would be possible would be if someone were to buy the land from us - ala St Mirren's sale of Love Street, and for us to move out-of-town. I just don't see that being a possibility anytime soon. All the major supermarkets have relatively modern stores either in the town or close by, and whilst the area commands high house prices, how would neighbouring a hotel affect that?

I don't like the idea of an out-of-town stadium somewhere near Fenwick. If we were to do it, then the land where the new College is going would have been perfect. Next to the station, 2 minutes from the town centre etc. Either way, it won't happen. The only option we have is to stick with what we've got and try to make it look more aesthetically pleasing.

Think you've hit the nail on the head!! Surely work could be done on the Moffat Stand to make it potentially a safe standing section?? The park looks ok but really needs some work!! It looks a bit past it tbh and, if I'm honest, we are beginning to look like a club who lack ambition in my eyes!! I know this isn't true but let's hope to God that Mann can get some work done to make us a team worth watching again!!

I don't think that's very likely considering the architecture of our stands. Would need serious alterations, and it just isn't financially viable. The club made a statement to STV saying as much a few months back. A temporary solution would be to get out the big flag, and have it over the middle sections in the Moffat, and fill the rest with smaller flags or advertisements such as the QTS and Billy Bowie ones already present.

Never knew about the statement!! Flags sound like the only idea then!!

This was it:

"In principle, we would support the creation of "safe standing areas" but due to the capital expenditure required to convert seated, concrete terracing into an area suitable for "safe standing", this is not a priority at present. The stadium at Rugby Park was one of the first in Scotland to be fully converted into an "all covered, all seated stadium" in the 1990's and has a capacity of 18,000, offering excellent views of the pitch and easy access to the stands General maintenance of the stadium at Rugby Park is the most pressing requirement, having recently invested in new floodlights ‎and a 3G synthetic pitch, together costing over £600k. Further improvements to the existing stadium infrastructure are planned on a phased basis."

Knock it down and sell it for someone to build flats/offices on. We may as well, we've sold every other thing of value already.

I've always thought that if we knocked down the Moffat, combined with the space up to the turnstiles, we could build an indoor sports facility. Smaller pitches wihich could be used by the players to train, (rather than the pitch which isn't possible sometimes due to being outdoors), we could also rent this out, use it for functions - the whole shebang! I think QoTS are doing something similar and it shouldn't cost the earth.

Sponsor the f**k out it, and it might be more viable. "The QTS indoor arena, brought to you by Billy Bowie and The Park Hotel Ayrshire Ltd."

Queens have done it and its a lovely wee bit!! 2 7-A-Side pitches that they rent out!! Works well and most importantly makes them a few quid

Everyone would still call it Rugby Park anyway. Give the East Stand a catchy title like "The Rowallan Timber & Damp Specialists Stand" too.

Maybe Tourhill Joinery or Mitchell & Struthers would be interested for old times sake?
