Stenhousemanure vs Airdrieonians Fc

Recommended Posts

Airdrie comfortable winners. We should really have been in front but once Airdrie scored there was only one winner.

Lister ran us ragged and Boyle was excellent from left back. The kid at No 7 looked very good as well unlucky with a sensational effort first half.

We're just not good enough will be amazed if we finish above 9th.

Agreed. Guess the no 7 is another loanee but he was good. And Boyle at left back kept McMullan under wraps.

The first 20 odd minutes was all Stenny and they should have scored. The second 20 odd minutes was all us and we did score, and for the rest of the game I thought we looked comfortable from open play. Although I was a bit concerned at set-pieces.

A big win for us, a defeat and we would have been looking over our shoulders again, with the win we can now try and look forward and catch a couple of teams above us.

Jimmy Lister > Stenny back four. BTW Ross Docherty was probably motm today- number 7. Hope we can keep him beyond the end of the season. Stenny weren't up to much, they threaten a few times in the first half and a few times towards the end of the game. Big shout to Andy McNeil who somehow kept a deflected shot from being a goal!

Stenny could have won the game if they'd made their dominance in the early period count. As it was, they could have been 2 - 0 up before we scored - they had one stramashed off the line/ post from a corner, and then McNeill had a very good save from another (which I think took a deflection from one of our defenders). If either or both of those had gone in we would have no cause to complain about it, and that would have put a very different complexion on the match. They also had a good number of corners and free kicks in attacking positions, and had us under a fair amount of pressure. Even had it been 0-0 at half time, I would have fancied us for the result, on the basis that Stenny had thrown everything they had at us, and still not made the breakthrough. But that's how things are when you're at that end of the table, you just don't get the breaks. Goodness knows we've experienced that enough times ourselves in recent years. After Docherty's long-range effort (I agree, he had a great game) we managed to wake up a bit, and scored at a really good time. You'd have to say it was against the run of play, though.

I guess that deflated Stenny somewhat, as they didn't come out all guns blazing after half time, and in truth offered little in the second half. We looked pretty well in control, and after Prunty got his second (very unselfish play from Lister. He must assisted more goals than just about anyone else in the league), the only question was whether or not we would add to it.

We didn't, but that's two wins on the bounce, one defeat in eleven and our first clean sheet since the third of January. I still think the playoffs are an outside bet, but I enjoyed today, and if we can continue this good run of form and hope that Peterheid and Brechin don't pick up much from their games in hand, you never know.

Also - well done again to all involved in the Airdrie Aces, and the people at Stenhousemuir for co-operating with them. The kids obviously had a great day out, and loved it when Prunty and Big Jim Lister went to celebrate the second goal with them. It's so important for small clubs to engage with their local communities and work to get kids along to the matches. Kudos to all involved in doing such a power of work to bring through the next generation of Diamonds.

Horrible stuff yesterday. Stenhousemuir were dreadful and, other than a decent opening in the first 20 minutes or so, offered nothing. Airdrieonians were pretty good - Paddy Boyle did an absolute number on Paul McMullan and the wee man just could not get into the game, and big Jim Lister tore through our defence again and again and again - but they were abetted by such a passive Stenny side. All the good work that went into the match with Dunfermline Athletic was undone and we looked dire.

I have a degree of sympathy for the side with the second goal - Kieran Millar was very unfortunate to see the ball skiff off his head and play three Airdrie players onside - but that opening strike was disgusting stuff. What on earth was Alan Lithgow thinking when he cleared it? He was on his backside and whacked it to the edge of the area. Dire, and summed it up.

Proper relegation stuff. At least Ayr United and Stirling Albion lost but on that evidence we're going down the pan.

Ross Docherty was by far and away the man of the match. He never gave up on a ball, and rarely wasted a ball. Lister had an absolute stormer again never giving up. Fraser was quiet but it's good to see a player in a Diamond Jersey with no fear to put his foot on the ball and try to dictate the tempo of the match.

My worry yesterday was the seeming lack of structure we had in the middle. I'm not sure who the wide midfielders were supposed to be, but it seemed we flooded the middle of the park with centre midfielders: Gilfillan, Docherty, Fraser and Fitzpatrick. It's a testament to how good Bain and Boyle were (or a testament to how ineffectual Stenny's wingers were) that the oppositions wide players were so quiet.

A special mention to Andrew Dallas for trying to show off his shiny new FIFA badge at every opportunity.

Yes, we seem to lack specialist wingers. We've had Blockley on the right wing in recent weeks, which is obviously not the right place for someone with his poor distribution. I had assumed that Jordan Morton was signed to play on the wing, but it seems not. It looks like we're using Bain and Boyle as wingbacks, which they seem to manage fairly well.

We aren't really playing with any wide midfielders, it's a central 3 with with Fraser in front of them, and we're relying on the full-backs for width. It makes us a lot more solid and if we score the first goal then it's a perfect scenario as we can sit a bit deeper and Lister can use the space in behind. The problem is if we lose the first goal I don't really see us being able to break teams down.

It's the kind of formation that if you score first and win people think it was a cruise, if you lose the first goal and lose people will say it lacks imagination and creativity. I'm more than happy to go with it though.

My favourite Andrew Dallas moment was when he thoughtfully spent 10 seconds explaining to the Stenhousemuir player that you aren't allowed to handball it.
