Cruising

Only been on one, a few days up to the Faroes and back. Don't think it was the usual smelling-of-biscuits-and-piss demographic you imagine on longer cruises - seemed to be quite a lot of outdoorsy hiker types - but they seemed to be only geared up to deal with the older age group.

They had a formal dress night that we bodyswerved, although we saw some codgers going to it looking like something out of "Abigail's Party". The food was mostly boiled to within an inch of its life stodgy '70s type stuff, and the onboard entertainment was reminiscent of something out of Phoenix Nights.

ETA - there was a a full day in Torshavn, which as you can imagine is tiny, so we kept on running into people from the boat, most memorably when we stopped off at a bar and were treated to an old dear we recognised giving the staff both barrels because they wouldn't accept a Royal Bank £20. I genuinely don't think she knew she was in a different country, and thought we were on the Shetlands or somewhere.

I've spoke to a few people at work needing insurance for their cruise holidays.

One person was going on a £30 grand cruise around the northern Atlantic starting at Anchorage and visiting Japan, vladivostock, Korea, China and Hong Kong.

I still struggle to comprehend paying that much for a 20 day trip.

I think they're getting conned if nobody's told them it's actually the Pacific they're going to.

Probably was the North Pacific he was going too, and I stopped paying attention to him when I realised he was a snobby rich c**t.

I'm a deck cadet. I was on Boudicca all summer there too, we were across in Greenland, Iceland, Norway, then down to Gibraltar, Tangier, Vigo and Cadiz. Got my orals in the summer. Bricking it would be an accurate description. I'm down at Warsash.

Most probably look at Thomsons. P&O on Oriana or smaller. Ultra luxury, definitely Seabourn or Azamara.

Yeah I was out of Greenock through the summer. I disembarked in Greenock, so I just hopped in the car and was home 45 mins later. Sure beats flying home from Malaysia with 40Kg luggage.

 bj's.is that part of the package ?

Anyone been on one of these Easyboat cruises off the telly? Like the idea, cruise over night and different port every day and evening. You'd probably have to be quite young or old to cope with all the vomit though.

P.S. I've seen posh cuise ships parking in Invergordon with passengers wandering the downbeaten streets looking for men in kilts.

Yeah, my family and I went on one for our summer holiday in 2008. The cruise started at Piraeus and went around a few of the Greek islands and went into Bodrum in Turkey for a day. Given what we paid for it, it was fine and we all enjoyed it. I quite liked how you woke up somewhere new every day, Mykonos was my favourite island, I'd happily go back there. Didn't mind Bodrum either, quite liked the contrast between the Greek and Turkish cultures.

The ship itself was small and so were the cabins, but we never spent too much time in the cabin and were out and about a lot. I'd like to try a slightly larger ship one day, not sure where I'd want to head to first though.

Went on one last Feb and loved it! The ship was MSC Divina and it was gigantic but class.

It sailed from Miami and went to Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico and Bahamas before going back to Miami. I loved seeing a different place most days and there was plenty to do on the boat on the couple of days at sea. On a night time on the boat we would mostly go to the theatre or comedy club before hitting the casino and just playing Poker all night.

It's crazy all the stuff they have on cruise ships. It had cinemas, five a side football pitches, nightclubs etc. If you are just looking to get hammered or get your hole then it's probably not for you but the age range and atmosphere was perfect for us (30-50)

I went on one for my honeymoon. The ship was the Celebrity Constellation and it embarked from Miami before traveling to Jamaica, the Cayman islands and back again.

I didn't like it. The ship was too crowded, it didn't have enough to entertain me and I couldn't be bothered with having to dress up in a suit for dinner and sit with strangers.

It had one bar where you could sit and have a beer and the place to be seemed to be a Martini bar where you could buy $16 drinks and little else. It had a basketball court, a tiny pool which was always rammed and a ping pong table. That was about it.

You were on your honeymoon, you shouldn't have left the room. But some of the points you make are what I'm worried about, I like doing my own thing and can't often be bothered with other people, being sociable and getting dressed up for fucking dinner.

There's a thread on the travel forum on cruising.

I've related my experience and thoughts there.

As have others!

I'd rather suggest you were doing it wrong.

I went on a seven day cruise last June, just me and the wife. P&O Azura, was massive with 5000 people onboard. Sailed from Southampton to Guernsey then to Cherbourg,Porto and La Coruna.

I never fancied it but we loved it, superb food 24hours and 24hour room service. Entertainment was decent but we spent most evenings in the Casino. Loads to do at night and during the day, you don't really need to leave the ship when it docks at each port as you can do lots on the ship but we went exploring.

Definitely worth a try.

I think I was actually looking at a very similar cruise, would do a 7 day first of all I think.

You don't have to sit with other people, you can get a table for two and you don't need to be suited and booted for dinner just no shorts and trainers or shit like that, you need to be smart in most hotels for dinner so its much the same on a cruise ship.
