supermik
If you are going to cook them in oil, don't use potatoes from the supermarket. Go to a greengrocers as they usually sell specialist potatoes that are meant to be deep fried. Supermarket spuds usually go very dark and soggy. When the chips start to float at the top of the oil then they are ready.
a1974h
Chip pan fires eh, how mental were they. A common occurrence in the 70's and 80's among the scottish alcoholics. It was the classic case of coming home from the boozer sticking on the chip pan and crashing out. A chip pan was a weapon of mass destruction in the hands of a steaming Scotsman. It might have been darwins natural selection in full effect mind you

DAFC
No real need to do this anymore when you can buy wedges of oven chips for pennies. Can't remember the last time I ate a chip, far too healthy these days.

Zetterlund
Put the chipped potatos in cold water for about fifteen minutes before taking them out and drying them (takes the starch out). Then fry with a little oil for about five minutes before placing in the oven on a high heat with more olive oil. Check and turn them every five minutes for aprox 30 minutes. Amazing chips, go perfectly with a nice medium-rare rib steak.

jamamafegan
I like how DA Baracus says people who have deep fat fryers are "utter rats" yet he's the one having to duct tape blankets over his windows. Unbelievable.
Miguel Sanchez
I am capable of peeling a potato then slicing it then putting it in a chip pan, so I don't eat frozen chips. I wouldn't put them into a pan with oil though, submersing something frozen in boiling oil seems a bit odd.
monkeyblair
Oven chips only but prefer homemade potato wedges if I'm being honest. Vote is 17 - 17 at the moment.
