Freedom of speech is sometimes a hard thing to defend as you end up defending all kinds of unpleasant people but we do regulate commerce more stringently than we regulate political expression . NLP was fairly popular in the 70's or 80's and there is a fair bit of evidence to suggest it works within certain contexts. Most sales courses will teach you techniques that are largely based on it. The problem is that if you are not very good at it or you use it incorrectly you come across sounding like a simpleton or incredibly condescending and patronising.
