mjw
They were on about it on MSNBC this morning and how it would be a 'good thing' if it hit Cuba first to take some of the power out of it.I didn't catch the Cuban news to see their view on this.

Cerberus
Why anyone would want to stay in or visit Florida is beyond me. Also they seem to get a lot of hurricanes.
dorlomin
Jesus, it made landfall in Cuba as a cat five. That means the eyewall with its 160mph winds is on land. Normally the very strongest reported winds remain out at sea. Only the second time in recorded history a hurricane of category 5 has made landfall in Cuba. All the waters coloured brown are 30C+ Its a huge storm, not just high winds but its so big. These records are now a day out of date, its likely broken a couple more over the past 24 hours. https://webcms.colostate.edu/tropical/media/sites/111/2017/09/Hurricane-Irma-Records.pdf Quote - 185 mph max winds for 37 hours – the longest any cyclone around the globe has maintained that intensity on record. The previous record was Haiyan in the NW Pacific at 24 hours - 3 day lifetime as a Category 5 hurricane – tied with Allen for 2nd longest lifetime spent at Cat. 5 strength – trailing only Cuba (1932) which was 3.25 days - Generated the most Accumulated Cyclone Energy by a tropical cyclone on record in the tropical Atlantic (7.5-20°N, 60-20°W) - Generated more Accumulated Cyclone Energy than 14 entire Atlantic hurricane seasons in the satellite era (since 1966) Edited September 9, 2017 by dorlomin

Hurricane Matthew took nearly 600 lives there last year, this one looks worse. A c**t of a storm.

1320Lichtie
This is crazy. Keeping right up to date with everything. Feel so bad for the people that stay there, all the costs and work that'll be involved to rebuild the place afterwards just blows my mind. No idea how these places can keep on recovering time after time from massive storms. The fallout from it when it clears off will be absolutely incredible. Total nightmare scenario. Anyone see the guy kite surfing in Miami....???
welshbairn
All the news seems to be about what a lesser storm might or might not do to Florida, very little about what's happening to Cuba right now.

Mainstream news that we all see will be US stuff though so it's understandable.

falkirkthebigclub
Could be fake but I've just read a tweet, from a Floridian sheriff, advising against firing guns at the hurricane. On the contrary, Cleatus. Get out there & represent America. Let's hear it for natural selection!

ayrunitedfw
Got back from a 2 week holiday from Florida yesterday, the 2nd week we were down in the Sandkey resort at Clearwater Beach and everyone is quite rightly panicking as they are saying this is going to be the worst hurricane experienced their in 100 years. Our hotel was evacuated on Friday morning, people were forced to either seek alternative accommodation or travel home. Luckily for us we were due to travel home on Friday night anyway so the only thing was instead of spending 3/4 hours at the airport we had to spend 8 hours. The airport was a lot pandemonium with people trying get flights out of there. Scary stuff and thoughts are with the people there.
Dindeleux
I was told/reminded by my parents today that we got caught up in Hurricane Lili whilst in the Florida Keys about 20 years ago. The whole island had to come into the main room of the Sheraton hotel on Key West as it was one of the few safe places. They said that it was relatively scary and that was a very tame hurricane so they could only imagine how bad this one must be. ETA - Winds hit a whopping 38mph where I was compared to the 140mph they expect so f**k being there just now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Lili_(1996)#United_States Edited September 10, 2017 by Dindeleux -
Stellaboz
Every time I see Florida Keys mentioned it reminds me of Bruce Willis in the mental home in 12 Monkeys.
