cmontheloknow
I didn't really know much about the club so had a dig and found this article from the Evening Times in July 1976:
invergowrie arab
Good stuff. I noticed just last week that Dunoon Camanachd just completed their inaugural season in the shinty leagues. They managed to fulfill every fixture which is a rarity at the regional league level. Looks like Reagan and Doncaster have missed the boat again. HibeeJibee
Bump. Orkney are in the hunt for the North Caledonian League title this season. They finished as runners-up making their debut in 2014-15 then slumped to fourth last season, though the telling statistic was that they won most of their home games and lost most of their away games on both occasions. This season the expanded league means more games - 14 not 10 - and they are 3pts behind Invergordon, with 4 games remaining. In theory Halkirk and Golspie are also still in the race, but fairly tenuously. Orkney's remaining games are home to Golspie, and away to Halkirk, Alness and Inverness Athletic (the bottom pair) - Invergordon's remaining games are home to Thurso, and away to Golspie, Halkirk and Tain St Duthus. lubo_blaha
Big derby in the Jock MacKay cup first round today as Orkney host Shetland.
HibeeJibee
Invergordon now 6pts clear with 2 games left. Orkney in second place have 4 games left. Other than an absurd set of results only these 2 clubs can win the North Caledonian League 2016-17. If two clubs end on the same points there is no GD, GF or head-to-head - it's a playoff for the title. Remaining fixtures:Saturday 4th March Halkirk v OrkneySaturday 11th March Tain St Duthus v InvergordonSaturday 18th March Orkney v Golspie Invergordon v ThursoSaturday 1st April Inverness Athletic v OrkneyDate TBC Alness v OrkneySaturday 15th April Playoff (if required)
Bully Wee Villa
Would like to see the island sides competing to get in the league. Not at Clyde's expense though, obvs.

HibeeJibee
Bump. Belter of a title race in North Caledonian this season. With the contenders all having played 8 of their 16 games, table stands:1 Thurso 19pts 2 Orkney 18pts 3 Golspie 18pts 4 Invergordon 18pts Invergordon host all 3 rivals in the remainder; Thurso host the Golspie and Orkney; and Golspie host Orkney. Tied on points = playoff, apparently. "Old school".
HibeeJibee
Orkney won NCL today, pipping chasers Invergordon by 1pt. Sadly NCL isn't in pyramid, nor Orkney licenced, so HL doesn't beckon.
Ginaro
On 15/07/2014 at 19:49, HibeeJibee said: All 3 compete at the Island Games football, which Shetland has previously hosted and won. Orkney and Shetland have rugby union clubs that have occasionally threatened to do something in the Scottish Rugby pyramid, and Scottish Rugby Cup. Incidentally they've played in the national rugby levels before - and Orkney currently play in the North League (tier 5) which runs down to Fife, Stirling, Dundee and Clackmannan - despite rugby being mostly amateur. SRU provides travel assistance grants, IIRC. Just came across this thread - an update on the rugby situation: This is the third season that Orkney have played in the bottom rung of four national leagues, having moved up from the Caledonia regional league in 2015. Two games to go and two points above relegation. The SRU provide up to £2,750 for travel expenses to Orkney, Shetland or Stornoway (those other two are in Caledonia division 2 north). You can claim up to £375 for travel to Arran, Bute, Cowal or Mull. Something similar might need to be done for clubs travelling if they ever joined a north pyramid? HibeeJibee
NCL golden boot winner - from the champions Orkney - is the wonderfully named Thorfinn Stout.
The Mantis
Anybody know much about Orkney summer football? Saw one game in 1999, Wanderers v Thorfinn, think it was at the Bignold which was just a public park afaicr. Going up for a week in June. Are there any parks in Orkney that are better than school pitches etc? Rockworks, where Holm play, looks OK but they only play in the Parish Cup according to what I can find, so I won't catch a game there. Looks disappointing compared to Lewis & Harris where most of the clubs have their own ground, and Shetland to a lesser extent. I take it Pickaquoy Centre doesn't have a proper stadium either? ETA - before anybody asks, Thorfinn Stout didn't take on Wanderers singlehanded.
