Of course they are a basket case - but that really isn't the point.  I doubt McInness is on anything more than £150K pa at Aberdeen, if that.  He'd be a fool to negotiate less than £500K pa at Slumberland.  Thus, however it works out, and as long as he's canny with his personal expenditure, he banks £1 million from a three year contract however he performs.

If you're 45 that's an absolute no-brainer.

Trifling sums if he ends up back up the road as a flop.

We may have different standards but £1M in the hip pocket is far from 'trifling'.  No?

It's a trifling sum if you've ambitions of making it in English football.

I think McInnes will go, but as folk have suggested it won't be an easy choice. Realistically, a club like Sunderland is the biggest job that any manager coming out of a non-OF team is going to get (and even Lennon had to go to Bolton). He'll know that he's never going to get an offer from a bigger club.

At the same time, virtually everyone fails at Sunderland. Bruce did reasonably well for a couple of seasons, but apart from that they've been a basket-case for years. There's also whispers about there being a pretty appalling culture there in terms of drinking and general professionalism. If McInnes goes there and it's a disaster, he's going to have to go down to League 1 or 2 for his next gig in England.

Rumour in Sunderland that Aberdeen have offered to double McInnes' wage and will give him £2m to spend on fees. Martin Bain has flown out to America
