If England perform as they have the last campaign, and we continue picking up the points we have recently under Strachan, we'll overtake England within the year by my maths.

Of course, a result of some form against Germany and then beating England at Hampden could be enough to do it this year.

What? Remain unbeaten?

It would take England to take a pretty considerable dip for us to overtake them, or us to have an absolute dream campaign. Neither are really that likely to happen. Are England really going to slip up against the might of San Marino, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and Switzerland? They will be massive favourites to finish top of that group fairly easily, as they should be. They're a good qualifying team after all. But even if they did slip up massively, we'd probably have to beat Germany, Poland, Ireland etc and then beat England as well.

It's nowhere near as foregone a conclusion as you seem to be making out.

Should Scotland qualify for Euro 2016, which measurement is used to decide who goes in to what pot for the group stage?

Is it conceivable that a qualified Scotland could be in the second pot out of four given the decent position they currently have in the World Rankings, or does 18 years without being in a tournament mean they're likely to be lower? Ta.

It's neither of those things. The UEFA national team coefficient would be used - it's based on a fairly complicated formula which includes results from Euro 2012 (qualifying and final tournament), WC 2014 (qualifying and final tournament) and Euro 2016 qualifying.

This system is used for all UEFA draws - it was used to decide the pots for the qualifying groups too. Scotland were 31st at that stage, but if we qualified you'd imagine we'd be higher.

Am I right in saying that it's a pretty straight 1-24 seeding for the groups rather than the more complex World Cup geographical pots? So we'd look to be in the top 12 ideally in that case, which seems unlikely.

Cheers.

Surely then Scotland would be fourth seeds, maybe third at a push. I can't see there being another six teams as well as Scotland who haven't featured in any of the last few competitions.

Yeah - well that has always been the case in the past anyway. France as hosts will be seeded and then everyone else will be in order.
