Munich

Heading to Munich with a few mates for three nights at the start of March. We've got the 1860 game on the Friday night but apart from that there's a few options we're considering.

In terms of beer halls the Hofbrauhaus will be getting visited and we've got this a 10 minute walk down the street from the hotel which has rave reviews on Trip Advisor: http://www.augustinerkeller.de/en.htm

Not sure on nightclubs if anyone has any thoughts? There's a Pacha in Munich which I suppose is a safe bet.

Through the day there's a bit of discussion on what to do - I think the Beer and Oktoberfest museum is a must but also considering the BMW museum, the Olympic Stadium or Allianz Arena tour, and the museum of Hunting and Fishing looks no bad. Anyone been to any of these with any thoughts?

I can't wait for it personally.

I went to Oktoberfest on a stag weekend a couple of years ago.

I can't offer any advice as I was really drunk and we just went to the tents but I did nearly get arrested for urinating outside a strip club. A real high point in my life.

Been 4 times (2006, 2010, 2012, 2013) but never for more than a couple of days at a time. Fantastic place.

I can't actually offer much in terms of museums etc as it's never really cropped up as something to do- the only cultural thing we did was a Bike Tour during the 2006 World Cup to sweat out the hangover a bit but it really wasn't that strenuous. I'd recommend that. Even walking around the Marienplatz area there's plenty of impressive looking buildings.

Hofbrauhaus is OK, decent for an hour if you accept it as the tourist trap that it is and sing along with the oompah bands, the Augustiner one you've linked to is better especially if the weather is good. English garden is worth a walk around and there's a beer garden under the Chinese Tower there. Schwabing has a good few bars as well, quite a studenty area, next to Muenchner Freiheit U-bahn stop.

Clubbing- last time I was over we went to Kultfabrik which is a big complex with bars and clubs- I'm not really into the specialist dance music part of clubs, couldn't even tell you where we ended up.

One place I always end up in is Schillers sports bar near the central train station-bit of a grubbier area- which has the largest collection of blatantly fake sports memorabilia going, mainly boxing stuff, a picture of Tom Selleck on the wall, and a barman who looks like Rod Stewart. I think he might actually be the owner given he's been there for years. Relatively cheap and there's a door from the bar through to the fast food shop next to it which is genius IMO.

Don't think there are any beer festivals on at that time, we went to Springfest in April last year which is tremendous, same site as Oktoberfest without as many tourists and inflated hotel prices.

One practical tip is if you're getting the train in from the airport to make sure you stamp your ticket before boarding or else it's invalid and you'll get fined.

In typing this post I've realised that I haven't done much there apart from walk around a lot taking pictures, drink beer, and eat sausages but it's a brilliant place to do all of that and with a football game at the Allianz thrown in (we were back row of the top tier behind one goal, ridiculously high) it's a surefire winner.

Even though your ticket basically never gets checked don't risk not getting one. We risked it on the way back to the airport on the monday morning and of course this was the only time that our tickets got checked and we got a 80 euro fine, not an ideal start to the day :thumsup2

I love Munich, not big on the clubbing scene anymore. I've been to more than a few bars and clubs there. But the names of the places escapes me. For things to do, well I like anything to do with WW2. Munich was the spiritual home of Nazism, you can do a tour of where the nazis first got started. See a resturant that was Adolfs favourite and various other buildings that survived the war. Also Dachau concentration camp is a 10 min train ride away, something that's very worth seeing. It's truly chilling.

  • 1 month later...

Going in July for a few days which will coincide with the World Cup semi finals. Hope Germany are still involved and they are showing matches on some massive outside screens. My wife doesn't mind as she loves the local beer as much as I do.

Going next month for a stag! Can't wait! Never been. Want to see the Olympic stadion for obvious reasons...;)

Nazi tour would interest me, as would Dachau. Getting my pals to go with me would be another thing tho...

If you want to do a proper nazi tour thing. Get a train to Berchtesgaden and see the eagles nest and the remains ofthe berghoff. The views from the mountain are stunning. Plus you get to ride up a brass elevator in a mountain. It's like a Bond villain lair.

Keep meaning to go there, it's only about an hour and a half away from me. Well used to the views mind you.

I was thinking of a solo trip if you see the thread I have made. I am sure I paid no more than £120 for flights in September 2012. For may going by Easyjet I am looking at about £250. Christ I am as well paying a bit more and getting some Avios points from BA.

I am jealous. I have been to Munich but it was desultory: Airport>Office>Lunch>Office>Airport.

Mind you, pretty-much any German city is a delightful adventure. Thus I hope you and your pals have a brilliant time. Be sure to post some war stories? Aye?

Munich is a great city, not too much on the tourist side, Olympic stadium, BMW museum etc. But its great for hitting the beer halls and just enjoing beer and really good and cheap food. Going to Berchtesgaden is certainly worthwhile, but if you really want to do the Nazi but, better heading to Nuremberg, which for me is better than Munich. There is the Nazi party Headquarters which is now a museum and the Zepplin grounds. Amazing to see.

Salzburg is a fantastic place, used ot go every year to a town called St Wolfgang for Christmas regular. The whole place is pretty 'fairytale' in summer or winter.
