For Italian, I like Piccolo Mondo on Argyll Street in Glasgow. It's always been top notch any time I've been in. Honourable mention for Amore on Ingram Street which is also very good but in particular does a great value lunch menu, 3 courses for a tenner.

La Gondola in Kirkcaldy is an utterly delightful wee Italian restaurant.

Also (seriously) La Ducal in good old Cowdenbeath is a brilliant place too.

Ok neither are going to be the best in Scotland but anyone who likes their food and not tried any of these who live nearby, dae it.

Went to Martin Wishart's in Leith a few years ago for my brother's graduation, was phenomenal.

Mother India - probably the best Indian in Britain.

Overrated, and one of only two restaurants I've ever walked out of because of the food being terrible.

Best Indian I've been to was the Indali Lounge on Baker Street in London.

My folks are going to Andrew Fairlie this weekend at gleneagles. Seriously jealous.

Italian - La Lanterna in Hope Street, Glasgow

Best other - probably Chez Roux at Rocpool Reserve in Inverness. Been a few times and it has always been excellent.

Been to plenty of Italian & Chinese places but usually just walking in off the street, and can't remember any in Scotland that really stood out. Further afield, best Chinese I've had was in some place in Chinatown in London, no idea what it was called, and best Indian was in a place called The Indian Eye in Bath.

My favourites in Edinburgh

Italian - Piatto Verde, Dundee Terrace. A small place, only enough room for 12 people, this is a great little Italian, limited menu but very simple, great ingredients, good service and fantastic food.

Indian - I like the Queen's Spice in South Queensferry, a good traditional Indian. Brittania Spice down in Leith has a great reputation but I've never been.

Chinese - Chop Chop on Morrison Street and Leith is excellent. It's different from your normal Cantonese place, they specialise in dumplings and Northern Chinese cuisine. The food comes as it's ready, making it a kind of oriental tapas. If you prefer Cantonese style food then the Oriental Pavilion in Longstone has a great reputation and is always choc-full of Chinese people, a good sign.
