Scottish Football Sack Race 2014

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Had an idea for a wee competition for just a bit of fun to run throughout the whole calendar year.

In an idea very similar to the hugely popular Dead Pool I propose a competition whereby you select 10 managers of SPFL clubs who you predict will not see out the whole of 2014 in their current job; the idea being to score points when a manager does leave their post so as to be the winner.

How it works:

Entrants submit their list of 10 managers to me by PM including how they will leave their job (more on that later) by the games starting point of Saturday, January 4th. No entries after midnight between the 3rd and 4th. My intention would have been to start this from January 1st but I only had the idea today so thought a week's deadline was fair.

You score points in the following ways:

Each manager in the SPFL starts on 0 points and will earn a point for every day they remain in the job. This means that a manager leaving their post in December 2014 will earn a lot more points than one leaving in January so to keep the competition interesting right until the end of the year and to make sure we don't have an insurmountable lead develop early on. Points are also scored the following way:

50 bonus points if a manager you select is the first to lose their job

50 bonus points if a manager you select is the last to lose their job

25 bonus points if one of your managers leaves their job to take over the role vacated by one of your previous picks.

10 points if your manager receives the dreaded "vote of confidence" from the board.

Minus 10 points if your manager wins a Manager of the Month award.

Minus 25 points if your manager wins a Manager of the Year award.

25 bonus points for selecting how a manager will lose their job. To keep it simple, there are 3 options for this:

Sacked - To save any arguments anything that could be deemed as sacked but has been sugar-coated in an official statement will still be considered sacked, this includes "mutual consent". Basically anything not covered by the following two options.

Resigned of own accord - This includes leaving due to retirement, illness, personal/family reasons.

Resigned to join another club - self explanatory

NB. In the unlikely scenario that a manager dies in their post no bonus points will be awarded for this; it isn't the Dead Pool.

Also if one of your managers loses their initial job, gets another, but loses that within 2014 no extra bonus points will be awarded.

Here's the list of managers to currently choose from including the date they started their job (shamelessly stolen from the In the hot seat thread on Infowire):

08/05/08 - Dick Campbell (Forfar Athletic)
21/01/09 - Ross Jack (Elgin City)
25/03/10 - Neil Lennon (Celtic)
27/05/10 - Paul Sheerin (Arbroath)
07/06/10 - Danny Lennon (St Mirren)
30/12/10 - Stuart McCall (Motherwell)
07/02/11 - Jim Duffy (Clyde)
16/05/11 - Ally McCoist (Rangers)
18/05/11 - Paul Hartley (Alloa Athletic)
18/05/11 - Derek Adams (Ross County)
31/05/11 - John Coughlin (East Stirlingshire)
07/10/11 - Jim McInally (Peterhead)
26/10/11 - Ian Little (Berwick Rangers)
04/12/11 - Greig McDonald (Stirling Albion)
21/03/12 - Jim Jefferies (Dunfermline Athletic)
15/05/12 - Mark Roberts (Ayr United)
17/05/12 - Stuart Garden (Montrose)
03/07/12 - Grant Murray (Raith Rovers)
17/07/12 - Martyn Corrigan (Stenhousemuir)
09/10/12 - Ray McKinnon (Brechin City)
22/10/12 - Stephen Aitken (Stranraer)
22/11/12 - Ian Murray (Dumbarton)
13/01/13 - Jim Chapman (Annan Athletic)

30/01/13 - Jackie McNamara (Dundee United)

30/01/13 - Alan Archibald (Partick Thistle)

22/02/13 - John Brown (Dundee)

28/02/13 - Gary Locke (Heart of Midlothian)
03/04/13 - Gary Holt (Falkirk)

03/04/13 - Alex Neil (Hamilton Academical)

07/04/13 - Derek McInnes (Aberdeen)

05/05/13 - James Ward (Albion Rovers)

10/06/13 - Tommy Wright (St Johnstone)

25/06/13 - Allan Johnston (Kilmarnock)

27/06/13 - Jim McIntyre (Queen of the South)

12/09/13 - John McGlynn (Livingston)

24/10/13 - Gary Bollan (Airdrie United)

12/11/13 - Terry Butcher (Hibernian)

25/11/13 - Gary Naysmith (East Fife)

30/11/13 - Jimmy Nicholl (Cowdenbeath)

04/12/13 - John Hughes (Inverness Caledonian Thistle)

13/12/13 - Kenny Shiels (Morton)

Vacant - Queen's Park

So if want to take part please PM me your list of 10 managers to lose their jobs in 2014 by close of play January 3rd including the reason they will leave their posts so that the competition can start on January 4th.

If anybody does fancy to pick whoever becomes Queen's Park manager just put Queen's Park instead of the managers name.

If a manager you select leaves their job before January 4th you will be allowed another pick; you will not be awarded any points for this I'm afraid so that everybody has the same starting point.

Hopefully I've thought of/covered everything. Any questions just ask.

Let the sack race begin.

I can confidently predict that Gary Bollan will never be sacked from Airdrie United, and therefore claim joint first place. What's my prize?

Ah good spot. Apologies for that. Although in my defence I lifted the list from a thread that began before Airdrie had changed back to onions.

Wasn't sure if it would be something separate, left for another club or the "by mutual consent" line normally found in official statements.

I suppose if he joined another club immediately it'd be classed as that. Otherwise I'd group it along with mutual consent in the sacked column. Could see how big an impact it has come the summer!

Well that's it guys the competition is officially open and the race is on!

Fortunately it appears that none of the managers have fallen before the competition has started, although the Queen's Park job is still vacant.

We have 37 entrants in total and it appears that each entry is unique. 40 out of the 42 positions have been selected by competitors with Paul Hartley the overwhelming favourite to not remain at Alloa for the duration of 2014. There are 3 solo picks including the manager who has yet to be named at Queen's Park. The full list of manager nominations is:

1: Paul Hartley 28

2: Gary Locke 21

3: Paul Sheerin 19

4: Allan Johnston 16

And that concludes the draw. I'll be keeping an eye out on the bigger media outlets for news etc. although keeping track of managers who receive a "vote of confidence" may require a little assistance from you guys as I could easily miss this; especially if it comes from a statement from the club. Although I would expect a larger outlet such as the BBC, Sky or one of the national papers to pick that up.

Good luck guys; may your respective managers fall on their swords.

Well a lot of people had Paul Hartley but I think everybody was surprised by the way he has left his post, every single person who selected him believed he would only leave Alloa to go to another club. The updated scores are as follows:

1st= mid-table: 97

1st= Sevinnil: 97

The very popular choice of Hartley means there's only 7 players yet to score. It also means that as he is now gone the next faller should see the leader board start to spread out a bit too.
