The All New Occasionally Aussie P+B Quiz League and ☕ Occasional Cup ☕

Recommended Posts

Going to publish the league tables at lunchtime... it's very exciting in the SWL with 6 (sex) teams tied on 19 points at the top.

Lots of absentees though, including Scotfree, Jagfox, Alang1993, Gman and Dyl... also,  @Bully Wee Villa - don't seem to have your score for Tuesday ... if you want to join the 19 point love-in, get your score posted.

Hmmm... I definitely submitted my answers for Tuesday. I remember moaning about getting the Magyar bannerol upside-down. I reckon Div must have decided to install one of his updates while I was pressing the "send" button.

I've just done it again, trying from memory to get the same questions wrong as I did the first time, but no idea what I guessed for the Aussie nonsense. Fear not though, I got it wrong anyway.

5.

Okay. Here are the league tables for Wednesday.

AFJ is still in the running for his first ever top gong, along with 4 time winner MSU. Frankie S is the moral leader if not the de facto one. Still, nobody needs to worry about relegation at the moment unless the three people I've already mentioned deign to post some scores!

In the SWL, Leeds Saint had to ruin my "top 6 teams all on 19 points" by getting 20 at the 11th hour. Happily I'm still in contention for being promoted - quite surprising since I started the season on a paltry trois points.

And in the BHL, NorthernJambo is eyeing up the title after only his 2nd season in charge. One for the watching definitely...

Good point Livi, I got it wrong as well. Surely all get a bonus point today?

I realise you're a newb so not aware of all the rules of the league (in fact, half of the people here probably aren't). But here they are (pay particular attention to rule 4.1)

  1. The first person to post their score to any day's quiz must post the link to the day's quiz. This is sacrosanct.
    1. The link to the day's quiz must be the full link and not the link that only shows the latest quiz (cos then people start posting scores for the wrong day)
  2. The person posting the link to the next day's quiz will always get a sub-par score (not quite figured out why this is, though The DA seems to be bucking the trend).
  3. The_Kincardine (AKA Pickled_Herring) will not attempt the quiz until AFTER the Archers has finished (for the youngsters on this thread, the Archers is a radio soap opera for pensioners and morons).
  4. The answer provided by the question setter is always the correct one, even when it's quite clearly bollocks. No "moral" points will be awarded.
    1. You are, of course, permitted - nay expected - to piss and moan like f**k about the blatant unfairness of it all.
  5. Each team - with the exception of those in Australia - is required to complain at least once a week about how much of a nonsense the questions  about Aussie sport / politicians / reality TV are. (those around in the early days of the quiz thread will need to wipe a nostalgic tear from the eye as they recall the Guardian daily quiz which was sadly discontinued).
  6. If you want to discuss a question from the quiz, you are free to do so, as long as you don't give anything away. Which, of course, makes it bloody difficult to talk about it. That Louis XXXX today is a case in point. The fact that people knew that the right answer was wrong, but one of the wrong answers was right would lead you to correctly identify the right wrong answer.
    1. Don't use spoilers to discuss the answers either. People claim they don't work, although they quite plainly do. I think it's the young uns with their mobile phones and Crazy Frogs that have a problem.
  7. There is an arcane methodology for determining who finishes higher among teams with equal points. This is colloquially known as "New Quiz Difference" (to differentiate it from the old quiz difference which was equally confusing), or QD for short. Don't bother trying to work out its mysteries - just know that you haven't been diddled.
  8. At the end of the week, there is a play-off for the 3rd top / 3rd bottom teams. The deadline for submitting these play-off answers is arbitrary, and the questions themselves put the shite Aussie-centric questions to shame (Q.V. the last few weeks)
  9. If you need to take a previous quiz for the week, you can access the link for the archive on the 1st post of this thread (I should really put these rules there).
  10. There's also sometimes a cup which runs over the weekends. Except sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it runs during the week. Usually it will be buried beneath a dozen pages of other people's scores. It will be built in a shoddy online quiz app. It will be run by a random person (you won't know who it is until they start posting it). It will almost definitely contain mistakes. Supermik has declared his disgust with the concept of a quiz cup and refuses to play any part in it.

Just remembered one more...

11. Questions about Japanese islands appear randomly... sometimes you can go a month without seeing one, other times, you get 3 in a week. The only rule to remember is that the answer used to ALWAYS be Honshu. That was until people started answering Honshu by default, at which point, they cunningly changed the right answer to Hokkaido for just long enough to confuse everyone, before switching back to the default Honshu.

  • I stopped reading after this point, which I think has me covered. I don't expect folk getting bonus/moral points but I feel I should voice my disdain at it. I can't even mind what I answered, what the answer should be or what the answer 'should' have been. I was probably one of the two wrong answers
