His next move will make or break him, at the age now where he needs to play every week. Time to cut his losses and ask for a transfer out of there or mutual agree to terminate contract.
Nightmare
His only chance of making it at Sporting is if they have a poor year and Jorge Jesus gets the boot. He's just never going to give Gauld a chance. Hopefully a move similar to the Setubal one materialises this season, and that he's actually given a chance to succeed there and not sabotaged by his own clusterfuck of a manager.
Gordopolis
Yeah he's unnecessarily shackling himself by staying there. Cut the ties and head to a club where he's actually wanted.

Not exactly hitting the heights but if he gets an uninterrupted season of playing it's better than the current situation. It all feels a bit fragile though. Still think a clean break would be best.

I'm going to put this out and duck and run for cover... what if he is just not quite good enough, and that this is as far as he goes?

He didn't look out of place at Setubal so he I'm pretty sure he's good enough for that level. He needs games though, this is probably the best chance he'll get for a full season to show what he can do. My worry is that a newly promoted team might not be the best place for a young playmaker to shine.

If they have coaches that are good at developing younger players then it could be good, but I agree that a newly promoted team may not be the best place for him given that there may be a lot less margin for error.
RandomGuy.
He needs games, whether that's in an attacking team or defensive team it doesn't really matter. He just needs to be on the park getting experience, learning from mistakes and improving. Coaching only goes so far.
Nightmare
Was one of Setubal's better players in the few full games he had with them last year. Whether he's going to be good enough to play for Sporting or not is another question, but he's definitely comfortable at a mid-table club in that league, which is clearly of a pretty decent standard. Best thing that can happen right now is he gets a full season playing (which he probably would if it's this Aves team), JJ gets punted from Sporting and whoever the new manager is there next season is willing to give him a chance.

Antonio Di Natale didn't play in Serie A until he was 24 and he's sixth on the all-time top-scorer list. When Didier Drogba was 24 he was playing for Guingamp. At 21, Gauld still has 10-15 years ahead of him, no need to panic because he's not tearing up the Portuguese league.

You could apply that same logic to every single 21 year old footballer in Europe that isn't at the top yet. All of them could make it, most won't.Equally you could say that - although there are exceptions as you point out - the vast majority of top players were already regulars in their national sides squads by the time they were 21.

When the manager recalls you from what was beginning to look like a promising loan spell at a solid top flight club because he took the huff over a video posted on the internet, then yes, you can attribute some blame to the manager for Gauld's lack of development or progress.
RandomGuy.
That's all remember Lex wanted Jack Ross sacked last season, just weeks before they started one of the most remarkable runs of form in Scottish football. Him condemning Gauld means we'll witness Gauld smashing the Portuguese league this season.

Cant be arsed checking wiki but Im guessing they played a lot more pro games at this point though.
