Coaching Sessions: ideas & styles

Yeah all the division 1 teams we've played have been pretty decent. Just keep it positive mate because when you start getting negative that's you humped. Focus on positives and you'll get through it ! just keep in mind its all about learning and you'll get there ! everyone's struggling in their own way..

We're probably going to stay in the 2nd division next year, had problems with boys calling off the very last minute before a game ! Had to call in 3 of the 2001 boys a few weeks ago just to get a game. Could pull my hair out sometimes.

Just had a look at the league table there, seen you've only played 10 games... if you're struggling for a pitch i'dd recommend St James in Paisley... That's where we play all our games and we haven't had a problem !

Cheers mate I'll keep that in mind. We have 15 games left all in and had last Saturdays game an this weekends game cancelled due to fixture mix ups so will struggle big time to even finish our campaign in time this season

Nightmare. Always remember in 1st year my team ended up having to finish the season wih about 5 games left unplayed. Total farce. That was an astro turf free league!

How was the workshop - who took it? Was it any use?

I enjoyed it - Danny Bisland, Paul McNeil and James Docherty took it. Some interesting content and some interesting drills to use, especially regarding positioning etc.

Festival was called off, and rescheduled for Sunday.

Cheers for the feedback again guys. My plan is to get the boys onto an 11 a side park now the lighter nights are coming in and work on positioning, offside, and a few other things (BTID what you got for me :) ). I have found in the past few weeks sitting the boys down and explaining offside and other things in the game quoting exact wording from the up to date laws of the game manual (not long qualified as a ref :) ) gives the boys a better understanding in the theory part of things, which should help them practically. I discussed offside last week, and asked the boys what they thought offside meant, when did offside occur etc, then read the exact definition of the LOTG, and they had a decent understanding, even knowing when you cannot be offside (the only one they didn't get being from a goal kick)

We had a very important victory on Wednesday over Paul's old team Celtic - winning 2-1. With our other rivals losing tonight, we can win the league on Sunday! Very much looking forward to it should be a great day!

We lost 2-0 to Chelsea during the week. Decent result considering they are top of the 2nd. Only had 11 players as well so encouraging for us for next season, when we drop into the 2nd

Officially crowned Glasgow & District League Champions today with a 4-1 win. Not vintage from us but had enough quality to get over the finish line. 17 wins and a draw from 18...hoping to finish the season unbeaten but two tough ones coming up.

Chelsea are a good side, no shame in loosing. We beat the 2nd top team Gourock 3-0 on Saturday.. Two clean sheets in a row, pretty special for kids this age. So proud of them ! Shame I missed the game.

Yeah you'll find your level in the 2nd, a really good mix and anyone can beat anyone. Will look forward to some good game against you.

Think we've got 5/6 games left.

That's a good result. Heard Gourock are a good side. I think I would be in utter disbelief if we had 2 clean sheets in a row haha. Who u got this week?

Thanks V88, been a positive season for us overall -looking forward to working with this group next season already.

Just wanted to move the debate back to training - how does everyone structure their sessions? When working in the States, we were tought a really interesting theory on session planning which might sound bizarre but basically work backwards!

So for instance, once you have a theme in mind - imagine how the perfect game would look at the end. Then work back writing up your drills and practices to the warmup. I've always found my session flows more and drills are usually more relevant to what I had in mind at the end.

Would be great to see some session plans shared on here. If I can figure out how to post up a picture I'll try get one we did recently up. Hopefully some great ideas can be shared.

On a positive side note, our first goal on Sunday couldn't have worked out better from a coaches point of view. Working on fullbacks playing high and overlapping...the rightback plays the cross the left back slots it home at the back post! Makes all the hard work worthwhile when it pays off!

Been a while since we had an update - just wondering how everyone's season finished?

Ended the league with an excellent 3-0 win over our rivals to go the full season without defeat.

Came through a tough group at the end of May to retain our League Cup crown.

Finished the season with our own Champions League style tournament. Won the group scoring 9 conceeding 1 but lost on pens in the semi final! Great day though.

So double winners this year and a QF appearance in the Scottish - really pleased with the season. Very much looking forward to what next year brings.

Not been on here for a while nice to have a we catch up on whats been hapeening, well done to your lads BTID.

Has anyone been on the Positive Coachin workshop run by the SFA? We had Keith Wright and another guy, bald heid, his name escapes me just now, anyway Bonnyrigg were on this last Wednesday night and got to say I did take a wee bit from it and has made me rethink a few things not that I would say I am negative but just maybe not positive enough and if I am honest maybe too much of a scoreboard coach (this is a bad thing according to SFA)

Got a wee bit of a dilemma (only seem to use this thread as problem solving excercise, sorry) my laddie plays for my team and on this pcs course they talk about 2 kinds of players, cant remember what they called each type but basically one with natural ability that is hard to coach and the other not so gifted but will work hard to improve. My lad probbably falls into the first category and over the last few weeks is attitude has been getting progressively worse to the point where he is a total pain in the arse. This is my son and its very very very hard to be a dad and critical as we all love our children regardless but I am trying to be a coach as well.

On Saturday we hosted our annual Football Festival and at the start the manager read out the teams 5 teams of 4 laddies and when my son found out who was in his team he stormed off in the huff, little shite I thought, told him his ma would take him home, he had my back up so first time I have done this i swapped him with another laddie from the other teams as it wasnt fair on the rest of my lads. Oh and btw one of the parents said to me afterwards that my son played like Messi the first few games then went in a huff coz players around him were making mistakes and it sent his game all over the place.

After game we had a very frank conversation where I told him he will not be attending football until he improved his attitude, got the wife telling me I am being hard on him he is only 7, but thats my point he has a bit of ability and I want him to be the best he can be and enjoy himself, he isnt doing either just now so what is he going to be like when he is 15??? I dread to think.

Anyone got any suggestions what to do with him, how do you improve an attitude?

The only thing I thought was send him to another club where he isnt in comfort zone and see if he is as petualant on someone elses watch but the wife is having none of that and said get one of the other coaches to pull him aside and give him a talking to.

BTW the team I did take on Saturday were not the best players lost more games than they won drew a few but gave me everything and I was so proud of them, gave them more encouragement at every opportunity and the old positive negative positive sandwich worked well. Even one of the dads said they look like they are really enjoying it. Just want my kid to do the same, forget me being a coach as a proud dad its very disheartening to watch how he is going just now and blame myself.

War and peace signing off :)

Ooft, now there's a question. As neither a parent nor a coach of kids that young I won't pretend I have an answer to that. There's more than one answer anyway!

I think getting another coach to talk to him is a good start. Let him talk to him about the importance of playing as a team etc. There's a good chance that at times he might just see you as his dad giving him into trouble rather than his coach offering him advice (unavoidable with kids that young who'll maybe struggle to differentiate between dad at home and dad at football).

so maybe someone with whom he has a purely football-based relationship could get through to him.

Also, does he watch any football? Live or on tv just watching any level of football with him and just pointing out how reliant players are on each other. If he sees world class, successful players in particular rushing to hug teammates after scoring goals then it might encourage him to view it as a team game

Without knowing the full ins and outs of the story Boomtown, I'd say if your lad refuses to play for the team he is picked for then he just sits with you at the side. By putting him in another team it sends the message that if you moan enough you'll get your own way. If he really wants to play, then you'd hope he'll realise footie is a team game and it's not just about winning at that age.

Many kids at his age are very self orientated (individual) and as they grow older they learn to work as a team even when he is the strongest player. I don't think it would do him any harm attending another session during the week (whether that's an sfa class, or private) to see how he reacts to a different environment. Is the standard better / worse? Does he react in the same way? That would be my advice, that way he can still be part of your team but you'll be able to step back and watch how he behaves without you leading.

Started working with btid's milngavie team a couple of months ago. Enjoyed it so far - far better atmosphere around the club and better run in every way by better people.

That and they won the league at a canter against my old team. Gotta say, beating them twice towards the end of the season was mighty satisfying!

Took my first session on tuesday. Went alright but had far less space than I thought I would and with 22 boys it ended up a bit of a shambles but can learn from it anyway. Been there a while now so the boys all know me pretty well which makes it far easier to eventually step in and actually take the lead. Last team I was at I had been there 5 minutes and I was thrown in with a group of boys while the other coach buggered off to god knows where. I should have seen the signs and ran for the hills!

Boomtown - I asked the exact same question, earlier in the thread, as I am in the same position as you. My boy is 2001 and move to 11s next year, and I have coached him for four years now. I wont lie, it hasn't been easy in the past, and it wont be easy in the future, so don't expect it to get a lot better any time soon (being realistic here) but perseverance is the name of the game. If your kid plays for your team they are always going to think you are picking on them - its just the way things are. I have always, and will continue to drum it in to my boy, that for two hours training, and at games on a sunday, I am not "dad" and I am "David" and that he wont be treated any differently from any other player in the team. If he does well, he gets praised, and if he acts up, he will get a bollocking, and if it keeps up, will sit out the rest of the session. I have only had to have two players sit out sessions in the time I have been there for misbehaviour, and one of them was my boy.

BTID makes a great point, that regardless of ability, if he is unhappy about the team he is playing in, leave him out completely, and see how he reacts to that. he will either spit the dummy out completely, or the penny will drop that playing football beats hell out of standing on the sidelines, regardless of the personell in the team. The point about organising other sessions with someone else does the trick too. My boy is a goalie, and I send him to the John Hillcoat Academy at Clydebank High, and John is always saying to me, that Jack is a joy to coach, and always takes info on board. I realise it is more specialist training but the same rule applies, where kids listen to others before their parents :)

Paul from what I have read about you, you should enhance the already excellent coaching staff at the Wee Wanderers - good luck to you. Were you at the friendly with Celtic at the High School? I was the ref for that game

Great news GT, glad things have picked up! Always good to watch other sessions and take ideas from them.

When I heard Paul was leaving Celtic we jumped at the chance to get him on board. Been a real asset during the close season already and we know he believes in what we are trying to achieve here.

What is everyone's plans for pre season then? Ours will be pretty disrupted with more than half the team now selected for the west regional side away to Denmark at the end of the month. We only finished last week so won't be much need for fitness stuff - we'll prob just keep doing our high tempo sessions with a big emphasis on tactical play...with 5 new additions signing this summer. The group has a lot of potential but will need to work hard to achieve our goals.

Bumping this for the new season. How is everyone's preparations going?

We managed to win the Loch Lomond International on Sunday - first trophy of the season! Saved the best football for the knockout stages - boys finally won a shootout for the first time which was great all 4 pens scored. In the final we beat a strong Coltswood side 4-1. Great start to hopefully a very successful season.

Off to Dundee on Sunday to play the district champions then season starts following week!

Afternoon lads.

Been a pretty staggered pre-season with us struggling to get everyone together due to holidays etc.

I've noticed a difference in the boys since coming back. They seem a little bit bigger and slightly fitter, which is obviously a good thing going into the new season.

We have our first pre-season game tomorrow against Glenvale, who are new to our leage next year. They should provide us with a good test.

Still looking to get a few new players in to add to the depth of the squad.

Hoping to better last year's mid table finish.

I'll keep updating.

Best of luck guys.
