Sons' sorrow

Recommended Posts

I remember last season we were talking about how old our squad average is, well I've just noticed how we have quietly changed that. Here's how our squad looks at the minute:

Goalkeepers

1. Mark Brown (35) May 2017
19. Jamie Ewings (32) May 2017
27. Alan Martin (28) May 2017

Defenders

3. Mark Docherty (28) May 2017
4. Tom Lang (19) May 2017
5. Gregor Buchanan (26) May 2017
12. Daniel Harvie (18) May 2017 - loan from Aberdeen
14. Darren Barr (31) May 2017
17. David Smith (23) May 2017

Midfielders

6. Stuart Carswell (23) May 2017
8. Grant Gallagher (25) May 2017
11. Samuel Stanton (22) May 2017 - loan from Hibernian
16. Ross Lyden (16) May 2017
20. Ryan Clark (19) May 2017
21. Amadou Kassarate (20) May 2017
22. Andrew Stirling (26) May 2017
?. Calum Gallagher (22) ???????

Forwards

9. Garry Fleming (29) May 2017
10. Robert Thomson (23) May 2017
15. Donald McCallum (20) May 2017
23. Lewis Vaughan (21) May 2017 - loan from Raith Rovers
72. Christian Nade (32) May 2017

(All ages as of 01/01/2017)

That average age is only just over 24 and, if you remove Mark Brown and Jaz, that drops to 23.25. That must be nearing one of the youngest in the league.

Everyone told us Jim Lister was shite and he was the best thing since sliced bread. We were told Davie Smith was useless and had no delivery, we found a slot for him and he's doing a great job there and his crossing has been fine. Different players work at different teams, largely because expectations are different at each club, especially for us in this league. If he fits into our system/team better than he did at St. Mirren then it could work. Or he could be as shite as NorthBank says, I won't be writing him off now though.

At risk of repeating myself, I'll judge him on his performances with us and if stated above he works hard then I think he'll do fine here.

I liked Gallagher last season and was pleased he stayed, however he's been injured most of the season and lost his place to McAllister.

The clubs effectively swapping Gallagher and Todd pretty much sums up how hard it is to do business in January.

WARNING:  Don't read on if you want a hard dose of reality.

We should start looking for Aitken's replacement now.  He has been a revelation since B-day (Bonnyrigg) and if our form and success in the transfer market keeps improving at this rate he'll have his pick of the teams in the championship that sack their managers at the end of the season.

Dumbarton seem to be flinging the money around to stay in the league, where is it all coming from??

We haven't spent a penny...

ETA: If anything our wage bill is currently less than it was 13 days ago.

No we're not.

We've got rid of the same amount of players as we've brought in, including our two top earners in Thomson and Stevo. I'd actually say we're spending less on wages now than we were before the window.
