itzdrk
Red Bull Stratos, a mission to the edge of space, will attempt to transcend human limits that have existed for 50 years. Supported by a team of experts Felix Baumgartner plans to ascend to 120,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon and make a freefall jump rushing toward earth at supersonic speeds before parachuting to the ground. His attempt to dare atmospheric limits holds the potential to provide valuable medical and scientific research data for future pioneers. The Red Bull Stratos team brings together the world's leading minds in aerospace medicine, engineering, pressure suit development, capsule creation and balloon fabrication. It includes retired United States Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger, who holds three of the records Felix will strive to break. Joe's record jump from 102,800 ft in 1960 was during a time when no one knew if a human could survive a jump from the edge of space. Joe was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and had already taken a balloon to 97,000 feet in Project ManHigh and survived a drogue mishap during a jump from 76,400 feet in Excelsior I. The Excelsior III mission was his 33rd parachute jump. Although researching extremes was part of the program's goals, setting records wasn't the mission's purpose. Joe ascended in helium balloon launched from the back of a truck. He wore a pressurized suit on the way up in an open, unpressurized gondola. Scientific data captured from Joe's jump was shared with U.S. research personnel for development of the space program. Today Felix and his specialized team hope to take what was learned from Joe's jumps more than 50 years ago and press forward to test the edge of the human envelope. http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/
dundeebarry
Jumping out a plane at 12,000ft is probably the most exhilaratingthing I've ever done. I can't begin to imagine what it would be like doing it from ten times that height. If his 'chute should fail at least he'll have his enormous balls to break the fall. Dee Man
Just heard them talking about this on Radio Scotland. The boy is jumping from space. 23 miles up. He is going to die. Nutter.
dorlomin
To test space suits, an American made a similar jump in 1961, he is now advisor to this jump. Footage from that jump has been incorporated into a Boards of Canada music video. When you fall from that height, for most of the journey, you have no sense of motion. No feeling of wind rushing past you and you dont really see the ground getting closer. You are weightless (the exact same as in orbit, which is also constantly falling). Its only was the atmosphere thickens you really get a sense of moving.
audioslave
I hope he watched Funny Bones when he was younger because he's going to have to put his skeleton back in after it comes shooting out his arse.

Gaz
Earliest launch is at 2pm GMT, so 3pm here the now. Will take about 2 and a half hours to reach the required height so no chance of much jumping before half five or six I'd think.
Mr. Brightside
Joe Kittinger jumped from just over 100,000 feet in the 60's, this is a piece of piss compared to that.

Yeh I watched the documentary about the American in the 60s and he was scared shitless that he would orbit forever as he didn't hear any noise and didn't feel like he was dropping. dundeebarry
Is it better than triple dunting? Better than any drugs, taken in any quantities, I've ever sampled. The adrenaline rush is incredible. I did it on Oahu in Hawaii, over the North Shore, with some supreme stoner c**t strapped to my back (a tandem jump being the more technical description). The bit where you shuffle out to the edge of the plane door and sit with your legs dangling out is intense. It is a long way down from 12,000ft. The boy shouted, "Ready?" I replied, "YAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!" like a demented pirate, and out we went. The 30 seconds of freefall was like nothing else I've ever experienced. It was surprisingly serene when the 'chute's pulled. Really peaceful and quiet, and with the nice location I did it in, the view was amazing. The boy said the string of profanity that came out my mouth during freefall was among the best he'd heard in all the tandems he'd done.
