Fancy a gopher wanting to find sme tunnells. :P

Kinda cool place, must have a wee look sometime, the music video at the bottom would have been a freaky thing to come across on a wee jaunt through the tunnels.

That looks class - how do you get to the tunnels?

I normally walk along the disused railway from this point (Street View)

You can see the area on this map and where the railway disappears into the hill, following the track east. If you pan the map and follow the old track from the exit on the other side of the hill (near parallel to the A192) then you can see the second tunnel which exits onto a viaduct above the road. A good fun walk if nothing else. Like I said, you can see it's right next to the M90 bend but you need to come off and along a few country roads to get there. If you're coming from the south, it's best just to go up to the Bridge of Earn junction and come back down again. The tunnels used to be part of the old Perth to Edinburgh line which was hit by the Beeching Cuts. The motorway was built over most of the railway route here but where the road was able to go over and down the hill (hence the big bend), the trains had to go right through them.

How do people find all the entrance spots to all the urban exploring on that forum. Looks quality

Where there's a will there's a way. We found a way into one of the big old paper mills in Aberdeen for games of paintball and it was absolutely brilliant. Had about four floors of mayhem, shooting people down through holes in the floor, through the walls, over piles of rubble out in the yard - real, proper Ho Chi Minh kind of shit. That was until someone noticed the asbestos signs beside some of the pipes and we thought it was a bad idea from then on!

That was pretty creepy in itself though. There was a kitchen with foosty cups of tea on the table and it looked like someone had walked in one day and said to the staff "That's it, the mill's closed, off you go to your wife and kids". Chernobylesque in a way.

Reeks of 28 Days Later, but in the sun. Open that up as a paintball arena and Cyprus would suddenly become the Stag Do capital of the world! The Turkish military must have some great fun, although you can't just swim around that barrier on the beach, can you. rolleyes.gif

I've always wondered what they do all year round when they're in there.

Valentich disappearance

A pilot with a Class Four instrument rating and 150 hours of flight experience, Valentich filed a flight plan from Moorabbin Airport, Melbourne, to King Island in Bass Strait on 21 October 1978. Visibility was good and winds were light. He was flying a Cessna 182-L, with a cruising speed of around 256 km/h (160 mph). He departed Moorabbin at 18:19 local time, contacted the Melbourne Flight Service Unit to inform them of his presence, and reported reaching Cape Otway at 19:00.

At 19:06, Valentich asked Melbourne Flight Service Officer Steve Robey for information on other aircraft at his altitude (below 5000 ft, 1524 m) and was told there was no known traffic at that level. Valentich said he could see a large unknown aircraft which appeared to be illuminated by four bright landing lights. He was unable to confirm its type, but said it had passed about 1,000 feet (300 m) overhead and was moving at high speed. Valentich then reported that the aircraft was approaching him from the east and said the other pilot might be purposely toying with him.

At 19:09 Robey asked Valentich to confirm his altitude and that he was unable to identify the aircraft. Valentich confirmed his altitude and began to describe the aircraft, saying that it was "long", but that it was traveling too fast for him to describe it in more detail. Valentich stopped transmitting for about 30 seconds, during which time Robey asked for an estimate of the aircraft's size. Valentich replied that the aircraft was "orbiting" above him and that it had a shiny metal surface and a green light on it. This was followed by 28 seconds silence before Valentich reported that the aircraft had vanished. There was a further 25-second break in communications before Valentich reported that it was now approaching from the southwest. Twenty-nine seconds later, at 19:12:09 Valentich reported that he was experiencing engine problems and was going to proceed to King Island. There was brief silence until he said "it is hovering and it's not an aircraft". This was followed by 17 seconds of unidentified noise, described as being "metallic, scraping sounds", then all contact was lost.
