Bobby Williamson Caught Up In Gay Scandal

Just remembered Bobby Williamson exists, and this is one of the first hits for his name on Google    Might also be the first time I've seen an actual post by original recipe Seamus.

Anyone know what he's up to these days, and also Miguel's question above?

He moved to Kenya in 2013, took over a club there mid-season, won the league, finished runners-up in the FA cup, made SFs of League Cup. Following season they made it through 1 round of African Champions League, losing v Esperance, and were again leading the league when he became Kenya manager.

This was immediately after they'd been eliminated from 2015 African Nations Cup qualifying. He took them through 1 round of World Cup 2018 qualifying then went out 2-1 on aggregate to Cape Verde Islands. He was in charge for the opening 2 games of 2017 African Nations Cup qualifying, drew 1-1 away to Congo and lost 2-1 at home to Zambia. Their domestic-only team lost to Ethiopia in first round of African National Championships qualifying. His record in friendlies seems to have been pretty respectable: 2-0 wins v Seychelles and South Sudan, draw v Rwanda and 1-0 defeat in Egypt. They lost on penalties to Rwanda in Qf of the 2015 East-Central African Championships, which is the tournament he won for Uganda in 2011 leading to his popularity there for a time.

He seems to have lost his job after an admin coup of some kind in the Kenya FA, officials taking over demanding a home-grown manager not a European. He ended-up taking them to court for damages, unpaid salary and housing. Since then he's been linked with returning to Uganda post again then with the Malawi job in February this year. Reported as still living in Kenya in March.

He pops up in 'looking back' media features here. I'm sure there was a spread about him a Saturday edition of the Scotsman not that long ago. He's made a figure of fun, but few would've tried Africa, tbh.

No idea, isn't the focus of his Kilmarnock and Hibs retrospectives .

FWIW nothing on the newsfeeds or search engines comes up about him and the issue after the initial reports of the Ugandan FA threatening to introduce it. I don't remember there being any controversy over it actually being introduced either. Rather than assume he signed it, without corroboration you might equally assume he was never asked to, tbh.

A far more interesting career than he'd have had here TBF.

You do have to wonder about how our game is viewed in some parts of the world if (with all respect) a jobber like Bobby Williamson can walk straight over into the head coach role of a second-rate but ambitious African nation (Uganda). Probably a good sign if places like Kenya and Uganda are starting to realise their own managers might be worth looking at.
