The New Raith Rovers Thread

Recommended Posts

Eventually got round to watching the goals we conceded on Saturday, and my goodness, what a horror show.

I’d like to think it may be something of a wake-up call, but I also said that after losing to Albion Rovers, and a few folk said it after the Ayr debacle, so I’m not so sure.

I’m certainly not buying this, ‘don’t become a bad team overnight’ shtick that is starting to come from inside the club though, as being poor-to dreadful between September to November isn’t an overnight process.

It's the "Three in a row Syndrome", that is what is haunting us!!

Stick on win on Saturday.    :whistle

Nicked from Fantalk:

Only Vaughan and Davo likely to be back on Saturday. Benny about 2 weeks away from proper running. No timescale on McHattie (abdomen injury, same one again). Barr has a groin injury and is seeing a specialist on Thursday.  No news regarding Cuthbert/Lennox.

Lennox made the bench on Saturday, surely Lennox with one leg is still better than Smith l, probably still  more likely to come off his line too

Was hoping  for better news regarding the injuries but it's clear that something has been plaguing Barr for weeks now so best he gets it sorted.  Get Lennox back in goals, Davo back in defense with Murray out on left and let young Mckay get a run of games.  Was hoping we could start to see Vaughan playing in behind the strikers but with Barr now out i'd assume he will be playing wing again.   I just hope we aren't rushing these guys back no point them being out longer.

Mchattie has been a complete waste of money if hes not out injured hes playing with injury.  I assume he is on decent enough money......Could of had a decent left back on loan and maybe even enough for a winger.

I see Yogi has been opening his mouth and letting his arse rumble again...

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/john-hughes-insists-managerial-record-11560525

Quote

Val McDermid found him guilty of crimes against Raith Rovers after his role in the Kirkcaldy club’s relegation to League One.

But despite being the subject of a scathing attack by the bestselling author, John Hughes insists his record in management stands up with the best in Scottish football.

Hughes this month missed out on the Dundee United job to his former Edinburgh rival Csaba Laszlo but promised the next club to give him a chance will reap the rewards.

The 53-year-old blames mitigating circumstances for failing to save the Fifers as he brushed off an astonishing social media outburst from McDermid.

Speaking to United fans on Twitter about the prospect of him succeeding Ray McKinnon, she wrote: “Heaven help you if you get Yogi. Continually slagging off the players in the media was incredibly destructive. No ability to create team spirit and positive attitude.”

She had stepped down from the Stark’s Park board three weeks earlier but remains a major sponsor and Hughes said: “Someone told me about that but I’ve never met that woman.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But if she was on the board and she’s saying that then she’s culpable herself, isn’t she?

“Listen social media is water off a duck’s back. You have to fail to be successful. I’ll take that one right on the chin no problem.

“If you are the last man out the pub you have to pay the bill. It’s as simple as that, so I’ll pay the bill.

“Let everyone dive for cover. It’s certainly made me a better man.

“The Fife people are working class. You get the banter over there and it’s a great club. The quicker they are back in the big time the better as there are a lot of good people there.”

Hughes admits he could have abandoned Raith to succeed Mark McGhee at Motherwell before Stevie Robinson got the job in March.

But he showed his loyalty after accepting the challenge of a relegation battle at Raith following Gary Locke’s departure the month before.

Hughes has no regrets but is keen to get back into the game after missing out on the Tannadice post.

He guided Inverness Caley Thistle into Europe after lifting the Scottish Cup – their first major trophy – two-and-a-half years ago and led Falkirk to the Scottish Cup Final in 2009. He said: “I spoke with Dundee United but myself and my agent Raymond Sparkes left it a little bit for the simple reason they knew where I was if they wanted me.

“The reason I say that is they came for me the last time when I was at Inverness and were prepared to pay compensation.

“It never came to fruition. Eventually the phone call came and they asked me to come and speak with them.

“I went along and went through the questions – ‘What did they think needed done?’ ‘What were my plans?’ ‘Who did I want to bring in in terms of players and staff?’

“I was honest and up front. I came out, phoned up Raymond and told him I had put my case forward.

“I just think at this moment in time it might have been a bit too much in terms of finance and trying to bring players into the club.

“Dundee United should be playing their football in the Premiership and they've got a good guy. I met Csaba when I was manager of Hibs. He’s a good personality and I really do wish him all the best. It was an opportunity I wish had come my way.

“I was wanting it – I’m not going to deny that – but it just wasn’t right and there are no hard feelings.

“When I was at Raith Rovers I had the chance to go to Motherwell but didn’t because of my loyalty and honesty. How could you walk out when they’ve asked you to come in and help them out? They were struggling so I stayed there. That was one opportunity.

“There were another couple down south I could have had, Shrewsbury being one. But I wasn’t ready to go.

“I had another one abroad. But I would have been away for two-and-a-half years – it just wasn’t right.

“I have great belief and trust in what I’ve done. I don’t self-promote, that’s not my style (). But if you look at my CV, outwith anybody who has managed Rangers and Celtic, I bet you it’s right up there.

“Two teams for the first time in their history, Falkirk and Inverness, into Europe, Hibs into Europe with Celtic and Rangers in the league.

“I left Falkirk. What happens? They got relegated and have never been in the top flight since because of my standards. I also got them to the Scottish Cup Final. I leave Inverness. What happens? Relegated. I won the Scottish Cup and got them to the League Cup Final. It’s not bad.

“There’s success there. And doing it on an attractive brand of football – if I get the time.

“Plus I produce good young players. David Wotherspoon – debut. Scott Arfield – debut. Tam Scobbie – debut.

“I like to work with young players like Kasper Schmeichel and Tim Krul.

“It wasn’t Dundee United this time but someone will get the benefit of it.

“I’ll get in there and get my teeth back into it. It’s my passion and what I want to do.” And any employers who might be put off by a relegation on his CV should listen to some of the factors.

Hughes said: “Do you know my win rate was better than Gary’s? Do you know I was in there for 11 weeks? I won five, lost seven, drew two.

“I never had a goalkeeper – all of them were injured. I never had a window.

“Who’s the top goalscorer in Scotland this year? Lewis Vaughan. Where was he when I was there? Dumbarton. Who’s the best player at Raith Rovers? Scott Robertson. Where was he when I was there? Injured. He never played.

“Ross Callachan, what happened? He broke his arm and never played for the last few months.

“You’re up against it. If there’s no window you can’t bring players in so you’re ducking and diving.

“I went in in February. When was the last time they had won a game? October. But the last man frees all. That’s football. You can do all the courses you like but the biggest thing in football is common sense and your intuition.

“When I went into Raith Rovers they had no confidence or momentum. There was nothing. We needed to get that going but we just couldn’t.

“In the last game of the season when we had to beat Ayr we got the goalkeeper sent off within two minutes. We were down to 10 men but we still dug it out.

“That shows you they were still in there battling away.”

It's almost as if clubs getting relegated after Hughes leaves might be something to do with him building terrible squads then slithering away before they implode.

Indeed. Some amazing Yogi-isms in there:

As you point out PotM, he says he doesn't self promote, then comes out with a load of self-promotion. Good to see the whitewash of how badly he failed is starting with the media.

Stranraer match rescheduled to Saturday 20th January @ 3pm:

For all clubs get criticism about how they go about things, the SPFL, Stranraer and Rovers have handled this in the most logical way they can. Glad it's on a Saturday afternoon now.

I'm most upset, the wife has noticed this outbreak of common sense and now I've  got to go back to Stranraer.
