  3. Reasons to be cheerful is an understatement. after hearing my Mum did not have a long time only 2 weeks ago she has (so far) been through a successful liver transplant last night. Seems strange posting this on P&B but want to shout it from the rooftops....! Been an emotional time. I cannot put into words how amazing every single person at Edinburgh RI have been. I feel so insignificant in comparison to what these people do day after day. From porters, admin through to consultants and surgeons. There’s obviously one other person I need to thank but words would never be enough and it feels incredibly selfish to feel the way I do today. Love to you all and have a good holiday everyone.

  5. I can give you my own answer as to why I have reservations. The issue here has nothing to do with ambition, or a fear of change. The issue is what do you go to the football for? The priorities for me are enjoyment, and following my local team. I'd like them to win every week but if that was my main priority I'd be watching Celtic - or Barca on the telly, like half the kids in Scotland. I grew up near Hampden and I've followed Queen's Park ever since. 18 years ago I moved to Linlithgow and started watching the Rose occasionally. At some point I became hooked and they're now my one and only. The experience of being a fan of a bigger Junior team is far, far better than being a fan of a team in SPFL1 & 2. I've been to every league ground and about 60 other Scottish grounds so I'm reasonably well placed to have an opinion. I pay half as much for admission (and nothing at all for my kids), don't face the same opposition four times a season, don't have nationwide travel (which seems nuts to me below full-time level), pay much less for generally better food and drinks, can bring cans and bottles of juice into the ground, don't get my bag searched, can come in at half-time for nothing, can nip out at half time to the local shop (or even home to use the loo) and don't have segregation (not common in SPFL1/2 but recently saw a dozen Albion Rovers fans guarded by 4 stewards at Stranraer). The costs and restrictions on SPFL clubs, plus the drudgery of a nationwide league playing each other 4 times (6 if you meet in a play off, more if you meet in the cups too) is deeply unappealing. I'd love Linlithgow Rose to be in a Lowland League with the best that division currently has, like Spartans, East Stirling and even EK, along with the likes of Talbot and Pollok. That league would be very tasty. But I wouldn't want them to go beyond that. If you ask Brora and Buckie Thistle fans, they didn't want to get promoted recently either. My attitude to the pyramid would change in a heartbeat if SPFL1 & 2 merged with the HFL and the LL to create two regionalised leagues of 18-20 teams (with others bumped down a tier), but the fans of SPFL clubs much prefer the structure the way it is - if they didn't, the presumably wouldn't have become fans of those clubs in the first place. As for my view now, I have reservations but there's safety in moving into the pyramid with the rest of the Juniors as it hugely reduces the chances of going into Tier 4. Rose haven't been great for a couple of years, but a few years ago they would have gone through the LL like a dose of salts. The standard in the LL has improved and there's a pretty low risk of going up if the other big Junior clubs are there too. So I'm for joining if everyone else does, but if it didn't happen I'd be fine with that.

  6. The bias on Radio Scotland makes it almost unlistenable. Off The Ball is unbearable as Stuart Cosgrove cannot go more than thirty seconds with mentioning the words ‘Saint’ or ‘Johnstone’. Tam Cowan is almost as bad with Motherwell. On Open All Mics you have Willie Miller and Richard Gordon constantly pushing the Aberdeen agenda. The painfully thick Alan Preston makes no attempt to hide his pro-Hearts/St Johnstone agenda. Chick Young is the class clown/Rangers & St Mirren apologist. Pat Bonner assumes the role of ignorant, deranged Celtic fundamentalist. In the lower leagues you have ‘Spency’ covering all things Dundee Utd and last but not least, shrieking halfwit Sandra Brown is trusted with looking after the Queen Of The South games. Worst of all is midweek Sportsound. It might as well be re-named ‘Staunchsound’. Kenny MacIntyre and his Loyalist friends - Chick Young, Alex ‘groupchat’ Rae, Richard Wilson, Kris Boyd, Barry Ferguson and Gordon Smith.

  7. This season will be the fifth in a row where both of the Edinburgh giants have finished below Aberdeen, in some cases not even finishing in the same division! Questions must surely be asked as to why these plucky northern upstarts have been allowed to consistently better these two massive clubs from the capital.

  10. So do what every club does (or at least should do) - set a budget, live within your means and compete at your natural level as a result. No-one is going to force Talbot or anyone else to overspend in order to move up the levels!

  13. Talk about irony... Talbot dominate the West Juniors because they have significantly better funding than the rest of the clubs. There's nowhere to go above the Superleague and it appears you're quite happy to suck up all the titles and leave a load of other clubs scrambling in your wake. No-one's saying you must be promoted, but there's other clubs who might fancy a crack at the Lowland League. I appreciate it's difficult now you're realising that your side might in fact be average in the grand scheme of things, rather than superior in its own little bubble.

  17. Decided to spend my morning working out our shots on target stats from the 25 games excluding Brechin - so here goes. All data is taken from the SPFL website. We've had 91 shots on target in the 25 games, scoring 12 goals That gives us a conversion percentage of 13.2% We score with 1 in every 7.6 shots on target We average 3.64 shots on target per game We've only recorded more shots on target than our opponents twice all season That was v St Mirren in December (6-0/1-0) and against QOS in January (8-5/0-0) The most shots on target we've had in one game was 12, in the 0-1 defeat to Morton last month. They also had 12. Our opponents have registered 174 shots on target in that time, scoring 39 goals That gives them a conversion percentage of 22.4% Opponents score with 1 in 4.7 shots on target Our opponents have averaged 6.96 shots on target per game The only team not to have at least four shots on target against us in a single game this season were St Mirren in December

  20. Friends. I must leave now as I'm working tomorrow. Take care and enjoy your holiday Monday if your lucky to get one. No doubt I will be back on to prove that Talbot's decision to stay Juniors is correct and your pyramid is pie in the sky. If I have upset anyone then get over it. I have collected a large number of red dots which I thank you for. I await the Beith Buffoon to add a few more. Good Night xxx

  22. The evidence suggests that people want to watch league football, otherwise if it was all about price Junior grounds would be bursting at the seams. They're largely empty. So aye, if someone like Talbot or Linithgow or Pollok get into the SPFL, I'm willing to bet their crowds will increase and not decrease, regardless of cost.

  23. If that's the case stay where you are and charge 6 quid. It's not in itself a reason not to have a pyramid where others with different views or options can go up and test the water.

  26. No mate. Shadows did a series of "celebrity" guest appearances back in the day and he was there one week when a group of us were on the town. The chat had been going back and forward between Dennis and the audience, with the help of an emcee. Someone asked him if he knew any Irish jokes and he said something to the effect "No, and I wouldn't want to offend anyone. Do you know any Australian jokes?" Quick as a flash a drunken mate who I'll call Stephen, (because that is his name), said "Aye, you ya cnut", resulting in much laughter and our wee group being ejected. Hardly worth the telling, but it was amusing at the time.

  27. As I said earlier, there are plenty out there who wouldn't open their curtains to watch non-league fitba, but will happily cough up the money to watch League football. There's more of them out there than the ones who think the opposite. Also, in the next decade, League Two will be unrecognisable from what it is now, there will be more Edinburgh City's and Annan's in the League, and more East Stirlingshire's in the HL/LL. People need to stop looking at this short term.

  29. Just as in the aftermath of Bonnyrigg, it's a time for cool heads as far as the managerial situation goes. For every Steve Clark or Ian Murray there are 3-4 Owen Coyles or John Hughes. I heard Hughes on Off the Ball yesterday lamenting his time at Raith. "We came in and had to work with the players we had" as if this had come as some sort of surprise to him. The last two performances were indeed rank, but they were against very good sides who caught us at a low ebb. Putting the (much) bigger issues aside for a moment and concentrating on the football side if, as is beginning to look a distinct possibility, we lose our Championship status via the play offs, we have a manager in place who has proven himself at that level. If we stay up we will have a manager in place who has kept us up for three seasons running.

  30. Was thinking about the transformation of the team since the transfer window opened. I looked back on the table after the Dumbarton game, compared it to now and I think it goes something like this... Livingston P14 Gd+16 Pts29 St Mirren P12 Gd+15 Pts29 Falkirk P13 Gd+10 Pts26 Morton P14 Gd+5 Pts21 Dunfermline P13 Gd+5 Pts20 Queen of the South P14 Gd-6 Pts16 Inverness P11 Gd+1 Pts15 Dundee United P12 Gd-7 Pts10 Dumbarton P12 Gd-15 Pts8 Brechin P13 Gd-23 Pts1

  33. You are right that it is basically a donation. That's the point though. The board and shareholders aren't exactly coining it out of project AFC. This is not a comnercial transaction. You are't being asked if you wast to spend money on a Starbucks membership. It's not for me and i won't be signing up. but: I don't see why the board should bankroll the club with no prospect of a return, although i'd love it if they would. I don't think ticket price rises for everyone is a great idea. People who lovd the club will be priced out. I don't want to see us go for the bargain basement approach again because it is a false economy. We maybe have fewer fans than some clubs but we probably have a higher percentage of wealthy fans. Therefore why not get some of them to share the burden if they want to. If they don't want to they can still get to games. If they do want to then they still get a bit more than average fan but are net financial contributors. on balance AFC are the good guys.

  35. The clubs problems are well documented but if we take the facts of our current situation it's that we have a hefty maintenance bill to service at our current stadium. We could potentially be in League 1 next season. We could potentially be up for sale. We won't have cash to get rid of Stevie Aitken who has a year remaining on his deal. Can I ask if would you rather we sacked Stevie, taking on a debt from somewhere, and got in an out of work manager (as we couldn't afford compensation for an in work manager) as replacement? For me where we are now isn't good, there's much room for improvement and I do fear the drop. But if we do drop, Aitken knows League 1 inside out and give me Stevie over every single muppet that gets listed for every job vacancy going these days. He has his faults, aye, but last year he built a good squad (for a club like ours) and has done so at Stranraer too. I think we need to back him until his deal runs out and see where we are then, right now we have bigger issues to deal with. I should add you are entitled to spend your money as you wish, I don't want this to seem like I'm having a go at folk who want to stay away, I understand that viewpoint. I'm just questioning what the alternative realistically is.

  36. I'm sure you posted all this stuff before about going home for a poo etc but you were an ex-Celtic fan I'm sure there's merit in your view that supporting a bigger Junior team is great crack (never mind the other 150 or so) but who are you to say it's far, far better than supporting Arbroath or Alloa. That's like a Goudieism Personally I saw Junior games when I was a wee boy, before I saw any seniors, so I don't share all this born again stuff I like the odd Junior game in a season where I see maybe 20 Junior out of 80 games but don't ask me to watch it every week. You might get entertained but sometimes you just want to see a higher standard.

  37. I have absolutely no interest in the bullshit politics in boxing about who is whose mandatory or voluntary or how they’ve been manoeuvred there. I have no interest in who owns what worthless belt and who is rumoured to be fighting who next and who they’re promoted by. I am only interested in watching competitive action between 2 well matched opponents. That show did not deliver anything like that.

  45. I didn't watch it, is that what he said? Terrific if so, would love to have him as a Scotland manager eventually, you can tell he'd be a hit. Enjoy the last few games folks, title wins don't actually come around that often and they should be cherished, pressure is almost off, travel in numbers and get heavy pished for every game.
