  2. Isn't one of the EU'S principles to retain all the cultures of each individual nation? This argument about being controlled by Brussels instead of London is nonsense. Can anyone seriously argue that Denmark, Portugal, Germany aren't independent nations. The EU is a trading union whereas the UK is an overpowering political and economic union where Scotland's wishes are continually ignored and our MP'S are trolled and mocked in parliament, all the while being told that we punch above our weight. A few years ago I'd have been happy with home rule/federalism but now it's Indy all the way. The UK is going backwards. Time to get off.

  3. One critical difference concerning Scotland, Catalonia and Quebec is that they are undisputed territorial political societies. That is to say, they are peoples whose self-identification as a people maps very cleanly onto a generally accepted population, living in a generally accepted territorial space, and who exercise within the internal constitutional arrangements of their State legitimate, recognised, institutional self-government. They share essentially all the fundamental properties of the basic units (sovereign, and typically nation, states) that the international community is built upon. To deny these communities a right of self-determination is very different from denying it for communities for whom these properties do not arise. This is a respect in which I think we can draw a meaningful distinction even between them and either the Flemish or Walloons, given the underlying dispute about the status of Brussels. It should be abundantly clear to anyone that where the internal borders of a state are hotly disputed, or where the ambiguity of borders is necessary to prevent ethnic conflict, that a right of secession or at least a right to establish a desire to secede can and ought reasonably to be restricted or not recognised, save as a remedial right against oppression or colonialism. But where they aren't, and where the parent state itself has literally recognised the importance of a sub-State unit as a people, to the extent that they have a territorially stable space and significant institutions of self-government, it is absurd that they should be denied those basic constitutional or fundamental rights as peoples, even if you think, and think fervently, that they should not secede from their parent states.

  6. I wasn’t going to wade in but @Twinkles victim blaming....:.. just under a yr ago I became a victim. I didn’t go to the police because I couldn’t face the questioning and the physical examinations. It happened, I needed to get myself together as quickly as possible as I have dependants. It wasn’t an easy decision. You can sit there and say “oh if it happened to my family we’d be straight to the police” But until you’ve been there it’s subjective. Would you force the hugely traumatised victim to go to the police despite conviction rates being low and the victim going through it time and again in the investigation and any trial? Some people want to heel, get appropriate help and leave it behind. Hollywood is run on power, his power was such that woman probably felt even less inclined to report anything as such an event strips you of your power. Leaves you with fear.

  7. Thank you for sharing that. I found Neil's from a distance take on the situation at Rugby Park very enlightening and brutally honest , with just his words you get a sense of the fella's passion for his hometown club, you can also detect a feeling of despair in his written text also , I may have riled a few Kilmarnock fan's on the next manager thread, this was not intentional I was only expressing my opinion on the possibilities available to the club.

  8. That's incredibly unfair, IMO. The women you're talking about have suffered unimaginably traumatic experiences, the likes of which will generally leave them: a) feeling internally vulnerable, cheap, dirty, ashamed, weak (these are all words the women in question used), etc; and b) fearful of either destruction of their lives (careers, public image, financial stability...all a lot more important than you're giving credence to), or escalation of abuse. Neither of those feelings are precursors to taking on one of the most powerful men in not only their chosen profession, but the entirety of the United States, a man who had already gone a long way to destroying their lives and could do much, much worse. There should be no blame on anyone other than Weinstein in this case, victim blaming is rarely (if ever) appropriate, and certainly isn't in this instance.

  19. I don't think anyone voted for them thinking "what a lot of bottle I've shown". They just saw a twat and named them. There's nothing inherently worthy about railing against a consensus. If some quarterwit says there's no gravity or that apartheid wasn't all that bad they get the pish ripped out of them. Rightly. You only defend such instances because you perceive them as a thorn in the side of some imaginary liberal bogeyman that the rest of us supposedly represent. And, lest we forget, if the consensus here n P&B is as "narrow" as you'd have it, then it's presumably not representative of wider society as a whole, and by your own standards you should be lauding us for not being the Sun & Daily Mail-reading mouth-breathers that get elections won in the UK. I look forward to receiving your plaudits.

  30. At 23rd with 14 points and 1 first place vote is someone very, very familiar to this thread already. "comes across as a boorish, pompous, tartan clad thicko" "Basically yer da on the football forum. A lesser Grimbo." "I'm a Thistle & Scotland fan and pro Scottish independence. So is this guy, so we should be good, right? Wrong. A petty nationalistic simpleton who by his posts on this thread is dying to be involved, so let's make his wish come true." "Basically same reasons as Fide, but without the beating cancer bit. Would happily risk the Scottish parliament in an "all or nothing" vote for independence." I was recently appalled to learn that this poster is a grown man with children. The start of my time on P&B saw a fevered summer with the independence referendum coming up and truly there have been none as counter-productive to that particular cause as @John Lambies Doos. Everything comes back to that one fact, no matter the subject. Either that or Scotland. Anything that's Scottish gets his support, anything vaguely anti-independence gets his scorn. I'd say it's hard for me to criticise him compared to other entrants given his sentiments are in completely the right place on the subject, but it isn't, purely owing to how boring, repetitive and thick he actually sounds. Anyone who's fond of the word "fukn" on the internet is obviously a simpleton, to see it employed so consistently on a single issue really compounds the issue. Maybe his heart is in the right place, but his usual posts on P&B are barely worth reading and his performance on this thread absolutely justifies his inclusion. That picture above is the first result when you google "yer da," and really, get yer da aff the internet, he's making a tit of himself again. Rather than a specific incident or incidents JLD is a prime example of someone who is all bad, all the time. I'm sure John Lambie and his pigeons would be appalled.

  36. I'm in favour of a Test Championship but not this format. The nine teams, six series, structure seems designed specifically to allow India to avoid playing Pakistan. Get that idea fucked. If they refuse to play Pakistan, they should have a points deduction. If it means they miss out on winning the title, then good. Also not keen on the four day tests. Weather in the British Isles is shit, the first time England draw a match that they would have won in five days because loads of play was lost to rain, people are going to be pissed off. That doesn't seem a good way to get more people turned on to test cricket.

  38. I can't give any insight into what JB brings to the youths. I only see the players on match days. If you take away the overage players it's difficult to say who's progressed. Some are a year older so will be more used to the rigours of the league. We have two excellent keepers in Gourlay and Ferrie and striker Matty Henvey who is gaining valuable experience. What I will say is that, in my opinion, the two most promising players are two who we've recently brought in, ie Lambert and Piggott.

  40. That is complete bollocks Swampy. Scotland has always been more European than England, and were trading with Northern Europe 500 years ago. England have all the levers of power, and seem to be hellbent on a scorched earth policy for Scotland. The EU are arms length by any reckoning.

  45. Maybe comparing it to McDonald's wasn't entirely correct...thinking about it, it's maybe more accurate to say Tennent's is more the Gregg's sausage roll of the beer world. Sometimes you're right in the mood for a couple...they're easy to get a hold of and they almost always hit the spot. Having said that, it's unlikely anybody's going to say that couple of Gregg's sausage rolls they just ate were the best meal they've ever had, and I reckon it's the same with Tennent's...nobody goes away disappointed - nobody's that excited either, but there's something earthy, comforting and ineffably down-home about that first tan of the first pint.
