Just turned 21. There's a rule about not being allowed to use slang now, isn't there? -

Swampy, on 26 May 2012 - 18:36, said:Bankia doesn't own Santander. Santander owns Santander. Bankia's operations are almost entirely in Spain as it's a conglomeration of regional banks (of which Spain has hundreds... ironically enough it was the spread of capital that seemed to be stopping the worst from happening, so as soon as Caja Madrid and Bancaja joined up with lots of the diddy banks, suddenly the risk was centralised.)
As I understand it Bankia's now been given the 19bn bailout it asked for.
Humble apologies I was mixing up Banco Santander with Bankia. -

It's hardly news that PIIGS are (to varying degrees) in a heap of shit. But the fact that Bankia (voluntarily) suspended trading and sought a bailout... well, it's hardly the harbinger of the apocalypse, is it? It's happening everywhere, all the time - including in the UK.
The point is rather that, yet again, the Eurozone's efforts to protect banks exposed to massive debts (partly in government bonds) is on the verge of failing yet again. Bankia is a big operation (second only to HSBC IIRC) and owns a lot of banking groups throughout Europe, including obviously Santander in the UK.
