In Topic: Stranraer v Alloa

Alloa were very impressive and Stranraer played poorly on the day. No argueing with the scorline to be honest because Alloa could have been further ahead at HT. Paul Hartley seemed to have his players right up for the game and I suspect Alloa might be running into form at an ideal time. Stranraer have had a good season and shouldn't fret too much. -

It was a very entertaining game. Alloa got the perfect start but Stranraer were well on top for most of the first half and maybe unlucky only to be one goal ahead. If the Stranraer play like that every week we will do okay. Alloa were much better in the second half though and being reduced to 10 men didn't really hinder them that much to be honest. Armand One had a poor game and Alloa looked more threatening when he was replaced. The guy that was sent off clearly won the ball but he did go in two footed and everyone knows you don't get away with those sort of tackles any longer. -

We have just had the pleasure of seeing the Academy U18 squad make it to the final of the Scottish schools cup, we should have 90% of that team signed and be talking to the other 10%. I would keep 4 overage players from the current squad and that would be it.
I share the same opinion as Cosmo , we could'nt care less if the reserves never won the SoS league again as long as we had one , two or even three youngsters coming through the ranks . That would be a greater success . I spoke to the reserve coach about the changes the club want to make regarding the reserve team and he is fully supportive of our aims.
We have just ran an advert in both the Galloway Gazette and the Free Press for 2 weeks inviting youngsters between the ages of 16 to 20 to come to trials at Stair Park .
For the last 40 or more years Stranraer reserves have been run independantly with one prime objective , to win the SoS league. That now must and hopefully will change , the reserves must be in place to give younsters in Wigtownshire the opportunity to progress to the 1st team.
There is no quick fix here and we are in it for the long haul . Would it be the end o the world if the clubs reserves never won another SoS league or trophy ? of course it would'nt . It would be more damning if we, as a committee, fail to change the reserve set-up .
Finally , an invitation to you "tucker" why dont you come along and help us ? you kow it has to change , we know it has to change, lets work at it together for the benefit of the local youngsters !
RHR.
Refreshing to see that some people appear to realise that change is necessary. Don't disagree with any of that post. -

Jimmy MCcabe, on 28 May 2011 - 06:53, said:As you know Tucker I have long held this view and if we don't follow it, it defeats the purpose of having a youth set up and a reserve team for that matter.
The idea of a Stranraer FC reserve side challenging for honours in the south with a team of 25/6/7 year old and older is completely flawed and does the club no favours, how many other league teams have reserve teams older than their frst team? and perpetuates the them and us two team one club system with little or no links that has long been the case. These players may well be good enough players at this level but unless they have a real chance of progression into the first team squad should in the main be moved on on a regular basis and will do a good job for other teams in the south with a totally different agenda and as such improve the league long term.
The nucleus of the Stranraer FC south squad MUST come from the youth set up with a scattering of more senior players willing to help their development and so the process should go on, players being moved on after 2/3 years if it becomes clear that they are unable to make the next step up. IMO for what its worth, everyone in the league would benefit, even the released players who should at least have a better grounding to play at their new clubs. Of course some players will be missed and perhaps mature into better players later and will be agrieved but it is the only sensible way to move the set up on.
I fully agree with this post but can only assume that other people at the club don't share your thoughts. I have heard via a few sources that more effort will be made this season to address previous failings in this respect but if what am hearing is correct it would appear that there has once again been no real shift in outlook. There are only so many times that you can claim to be changing the way the reserve set up is run without actually doing it. There are plenty of youngsters out there who fit the profile which a team like this should be looking towards as well. I must stress this is not a dig at yourself (in the end of the day you are only 1 man), the boys themselves who just want to play football or any others at the club who have similar views to which you have posted on this forum. However like other people with Stranraer Fc at heart and involved with youth football I would be interested to know why we continue to have a reserve set up that you just wouldn't see at any other professional club. If its just going to be a local team who are simply trying to win the South league why not just revert back to an Stranraer Athletic style team. Young players are not going to make significant progress unless there are given REGULAR football week in week out. Yes we will get some token gestures - folk talking about how many youngsters were in the SQUAD when it suits them (usually mostly made up of subs) and maybe more youngsters fielded when victories are almost guaranteed but when push comes to shove the priorities will still be on results that don't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.
GIVE THE BOYS A CHANCE SFC! There is a group who are good enough and dedicated enough to potentially develop into good players but unless they get a proper opportunity will simply fall by the wayside like many others have done in the past.
