Played through 9 holes in the first PGA tournament. Im +5, but the game is still amazing

I have a draw problem, which I thought Id fixed by tuning my clubs, but apparently not. As a rookie golfer with crappy stats I struggle to find the fairways, especially on longer holes, but thats always been the same in TW.

The 1:1 motion capture works superbly. You raise your "club" back a little, your on-screen persona raises his back a little. It really is brilliant. Id read some reviews that said the new putting was crap, but Ive found it really good. It is quite sensitive, but if you do a few practices to get the strength right and then do exactly the same for the real shot you get the same result.

This is the definitive golf game. No amount of HD graphics will produce a better golf game than this. :D

Oh, and got annoyed with the tennis. Its not that the MP doesnt work, it does, but the player is too often in the wrong position - running round the ball to hit forehands when backhand would be easier <_<

I've taken the Motion Plus out the Wii-mote, and I'm enjoying it more. Probably because I can then fit the racquet extension I've been using for Wii Tennis since I got the thing.

Still can't win of course. Played a couple of games online, and there's people there as good as Federer on it. Christ, it's only been out one day. :o

I've also played a couple people online, and was beaten, but put up a damn good fight! Started a career though, and won a couple, lost a couple. How do you get up to full 5 setters on the tennis though, currently I just play wee 3 game type things.

Oh, if you have problems moving, why not put the nunchuck in? I haven't yet, but it might be worth a shot. The motion capture works superbly. When a shot comes towards you, in Wii Sports I would sometimes panic and just waggle the remote randomly in front of me. That worked in Wii Sports, but here, it doesn't let me away with it! :(

Not for me it doesn't, I've lost count of the times I've swung the thing to take a shot and it does nothing on screen. All the more frustrating when you have an opponent pinned to a corner, and it's just a wee shot into the open court on the opposite side is all that's needed; you swing the remote as normal, and nothing happens.

Maybe you're just rubbish :P

But then I take proper manly swings, involving a lot of space and slowly developing aches in my back.

Edited to add, not long found the settings, so Im now on full 3 setters. Still on easy mind, but Im getting the hang of getting the ball where I want it to go.

I just played a five setter in the Roland Garros stage exhibition. I LOVE this game! :D

Back when I played Amazing Tennis on the SNES, who would have thought that things had progressed to this. Im actually quite tired now. As you said, there are bugs, but they either come down to the man not quite being in the right place, or problems with my swing.

Well it kind of is the point. Whats easier, bashing some buttons, flicking the remote, or actually playing real tennis? The Motionplus should make the game more difficult, but it should also make it more realistic, which IMO it does.

I've had the same swing-no-shot thing as you, but only when Ive not been ready, or quick enough, and not given it a proper swing.

edited to add - did I mention Tiger Woods is great :D

I get a much better game of tennis playing without the Motion Plus.

I started a game against Venus Williams using it, and the first four points were lost because whenever I swung the racket, nothing happened on screen. That's never once happened just using the normal swing controls. And I'm not one of those who simply flick the remote, I do the full swing thingy.

The annoying thing is, when the Motion Plus actually works, you get a better range of shots with top spin, and slice all done more effectively than with the default controls. However, it's just too over sensitive and buggy to get a proper game going.

To be honest Stewarty, the fact that you get a better game without the motion plus does suggest that it might be you rather than the motionplus. We've got 2 motion pluses, and in our house we've already had a couple of good games. It took my flatmate a bit of time to get used to it as she was in the habit of not swinging properly and making no effort. When she made an effort to judge her swing, her game improved massively.

I've not found it over sensitive and buggy in the slightest!

It appears it was me

Having been used to holding the WiiMote with the front of it representing the front of the racket, I didn't realise in this game, it's the side of the controller that's the front of the racket. Which has made things much better.

That said, there's still an annoying tendency for it not to swing.

Just lost 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in my first Australian Open match, and I'm absolutely fucked.

I knew it!

I played a five setter last night, and although I won in straight sets, I still ended up totally worn out after 2 sets. Its quite a tiring game.

Does Grand Slam Tennis have a career mode? Play different events and rise up the rankings type thing?

I think you mean super tennis.

Oh no, it was Amazing Tennis that we had on the SNES. I just checked it out on google, and it definitely existed. I remember it being very average, but the umpire had the most terrifying apocyliptical grimmness when announcing the scores. Even now, I still remember his computer generated "Advantage Server".

I was really looking forward to a game of tennis tonight, but I did my ankle in and cant stand on it. There are downsides to games becoming more realistic and requiring more effort.

Not really, no.

There's only the four grand slam events you actually play in. However, at each location, there's a series of training games, exhibition matches, and party games that you go through before you start the actual tournament. As far as I can make out, there doesn't seem to be any actual ranking system, apart from in the online mode, where people there are already insanely good after just a day.

This is gonna sound really stupid, but how do you actually play the games ? all mine seems to do is take you on to a court where a machine fires balls to you to hit them back.

Press 1, 2, or + to get to the menu (forget which), and then "quit" to take you to the main menu. Can't remember the exact button though as I don't have the game on, sorry.

What he said. The career mode in Virtua Tennis is supposedly much better.

I should be playing that tonight

It wasnt :( Technical problems meant I couldnt get it onto disc.

I played GST again and I think Ive changed my mind, it isnt very good. Its not that the controls dont work, its the player positioning that does my head in. I cant seem to work out how to control it. I cant see using the nunchuck would work when you're trying to swing the remote around
