It's horrifically overpriced and staffed with idiots that know nothing about games or computers / consoles

see when rock band came out, game in sauchiehall street had a competition where you could have a go and win some prizes n stuff so I signed up for a wee shot.

while waiting one of the staff members comes up to me:

"hi ... do you work in Game in East Kilbride"
"uhh, no"
"but you have in the past"
"noo, I live in the opposite direction, Ive never even been to East Kilbride"

walks away

2 minutes later the manager walks over

"excuse me"
"uh hu"
"we cant let you take part in this cometition, you know it's not open to staff"
"I dont work here"
"no but you work for the company"
"no I dont"
"yeah but ... you did"
"no you're mixing me up with someone else, I work in a bank, I've never worked for any computer game shop"
"look, I dont want to cause a scene I'm just letting you know you cant enter this & I think you should leave"

Football Manager teams up with Steam
Added on 09/10/2008 @ 14:55:00 in Press Release

LONDON (9th October, 2008) – Sports Interactive & SEGA Europe Ltd. today announce that the PC versions of Football Manager™ 2009 will incorporate Steamworks, a complete suite of publishing and development tools that offers PC game developers and publishers access to the game features and services available through Steam.

Steamworks will support both the retail and electronic versions of the Football Manager 2009 games giving players game updates, downloadable content, and patches. Also, players will be able to play from any PC in the world without needing their DVD copy of the game. STEAM will also host and distribute the Football Manager 2009 game demo which will be available when it is released a couple of weeks before the release of the full game.

Football Manager 2009 is now available for pre-purchase as a PC digital download from STEAM, and will be available for players to play at 09:00 GMT on the 14th November 2008. For details on availability and pricing, please visit www.footballmanager.com/buynow.

”Many of us at Sports Interactive have been big fans of Steam since it’s inception, so to be working with them properly this year across releases of Football Manager on the PC is fantastic” said Miles Jacobson, studio director at Sports Interactive. “It gives us the opportunity for all of our games players to get any patches or updates that we make available quickly and easily, as well as a place for us to host any other downloads, such as demos and promotional videos, with super fast broadband speeds for download, and no issues with bandwidth, which we are hit with each time we release a demo”.

“The Football Manager 2009 team has an incredible plan to extend the product beyond launch and achieve a level of connectivity with FM 2009 players that surpasses any prior release in the category,” said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. “We’re delighted to have Steamworks selected as the vehicle to help take this legendary franchise to the next level and look forward to offering the game to the millions logging onto Steam each week.”

Football Manager 2009 features a vast array of all new features including, for the first time ever, a full 3D view of the world famous Football Manager™ match engine.

Steam is a download portal, first introduced by Valve IIRC.

On the positive side, its good their making it easier to download patches etc. But the cynical side of me wonders if this is just a precursor to an even more buggy release than usual <_<

I'll be interested to play the demo, but cant say Im overly bothered about buying FM this year.

A major change like the 3D match engine will almost certainly mean more bugs :(

Yeah, probably.

My biggest concern is that they've spent a lot of time on the 3D engine at the expense of everything else :(

Apparently its been in the works since FM 05 so i would hope they have ironed out everything, i think they realise how easy it could mess up the game

How come?

The lateness of the demo and final release date for one. There are some comments on the SI forums about testing problems, although the general opinion seems to be that these were install related rather than gameplay, for another.

The 3D match engine is a huge change and, to be frank, SI dont do change well. I just dont have any faith that they can deliver a 3D match engine and a, relatively, bug free game. Their recent track record has been appaling and there doesnt seem to be anything to suggest that this one will be any different.

In the past I put up with the bugs and the issues but, to be honest, I cant really be bothered with it anymore. They've been doing this for so long that its becoming increasingly unacceptable to punt out software in the state that they do.

Indeed. Confirmed here along with minimum spec requirements

Before anyone clicks on that link I must warn you that its 10 pages of people :

a ) posting their PC specs and saying "Can I run FM2009?"
b ) whinging about the new DRM
c ) whinging about Steam
d ) asking questions that were answered on the first page
e ) all of the above

<_<
