I have an interview on Tuesday for a job and they have confirmed that it involves 'a literacy and numerical reasoning test'

What should I expect on this test? Has anyone else done one?

What job, and how old are you? That'll help us give you an idea of what is expected, tbh, but I'd understand if you didn't want to answer either.

In general terms, you would imagine something like that would be knowing how to spell key words (association, necessarily, accommodation) and the ability to add and multiply double digit numbers (23x17, 12x60).

We do these tests when recruiting clerical grade staff.

In essence if you can't pass the test, you wouldn't be able to post coherently on here. ;)

I have failed time and time in my life and that is why I succeed.

Maybe Div should introduce them.

If they put a tight time limit on the test it might be to measure how accurate your work is while under pressure. The questions are simple, but there's so many of them that if you try to answer them all within the alloted time your accuracy might suffer. Sometimes they use that as more of an indicator to your suitablity to the job than the actual score you get. If it is a test like that, then the correct way to handle it is to not try and finish and to instead focus on getting everything that you do correct.

Only ever had a Literacy/Numeracy test once (for a job at Makro when I was a student) and it was a piece of piss. Easy sums and word association nonsense. Easiest test I have ever done.

It will be very basic mathematics and basic literacy problems. The literacy test would typically involves a few paragraphs and you having to point out all the mistakes. If you fail it you may as well top yourself as your life would be officially over.

I had one recently and it was basic maths addition subtraction and division. Litrecy was just picking out the correct spelling of different words. It's a piece of piss. It's not like you'd be needing trig or be doing calculus. As has been said as long as you have no trouble with the basics you'll not fail.

One day alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. Which road do I take? she asked. Where do you want to go? was his response. I don't know, Alice answered. Then, said the cat, it doesn't matter. - Lewis Carroll

Its just to test basic numeracy and literacy. Its incredibly simple and judging by the fact you can string a sentence together you should be fine.

I had one of those last Tuesday. The literacy test was a passage of text with 15 mistakes and I had to spot and highlight each mistake. The numeracy test was 20 questions regarding information on a data sheet in front of you.

My maths is really awful :( I need a calculator for most things

Take a calculator with you. I bought one for 62p in Asda for mine only to turn up and find out that calculators were supplied despite the initial invite letter telling me to bring my own.

If you fail it you may as well top yourself as your life would be officially over.

Agreed. Surprisingly people do fail them though.....

There are so many variations of these assessments kicking about.

I've been involved, through the company I work for, with Kenexa, Career Harmony and Evaluate, which are more difficult than the ones described on this thread. Kenexa has a 1 in 3 pass rate. We use these assessments for recruiting contact centre staff around the UK.

Strangely I had one of these for DWP on Saturday, was much harder than I thought it would be which I was happy with as I know I got 100% on the numeracy.
