I was just looking at my driving licence, and the wee diagrams on the back showing all tyoes of vehicles that I can drive.
I've done the standard driving test which I passed in 1993, but I am able to drive the following vehicles

Car
Car + Trailer
Truck up to 7.5Te
Truckup to 7.5 Te plus trailer
Minibus upto 16 people
Minibus plus trailer
Also the usual Tractor, Road roller, moped etc.

However my wie passed her test in 1998 or there abouts, she had to do the theory test too (I didn't) but her licence says she cannot use a trailer, or drive a minibus, but is able to drive the truck upto 7.5te.

Was there a change in the law inbetween these dates, and are further tests now required for people wishing to use a trailer ?
I've never heard of anyone sitting the trailer driving licence.

I can drive motorbikes, cars, mopeds, tractors and motorised mowing machines under supervision by someone who has held a full driving license for 3 or more years.

At least I think thats what it means

Yes there was a change in the law. You can only drive anything above a car and trailer up to the minibus plus trailer if you have "grandfather's rights" i.e., passed pre 1997. After 1997 you need a separate test.

I think you should take another look at your wife's Driving licence. As she passed her car test (CategoryB) after 01.01.1997 she will not qualify to drive a truck up to 7.5Tonnes, without sitting a separate Driving Test for this class of vehicle.

She'll be allowed to drive a minibus up to a certain tonnage without sitting a test. As long as it's not part of her job. I can't remember what the weight restriction is though...
