I've read the books too - and I'd have to second the fact that the 3rd book was crap.

The first two were believable (as much as a serial killer who works forensics and only kills bad guys can be believable) and although the series doesn't follow the books exactly, the basic plot was there.

The 3rd book was just a totally ridiculous plot, and if they use it for the basis of the third series it will totally ruin things.

I liked the bits in the books about the kids however! ;)

Watched all of S1 and S2 on the internet, can't wait for series 3. Michael C. Hall is a really good actor, I'd like to see him in more things. The fact that somone thinks the 3rd book is pish is a little worrying. Some shows have a problem in justifying more series' so they just dream up daft plots, I thought the plot for the second book/series was excellent.

I believe most reviewers said the third was lazilly written and without the charm of the previous two books, while also developing some ludicrous plot twists...
What does a scanner see? he asked himself. I mean, really see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does a passive infrared scanner like they used to use or a cube-type holo-scanner like they use these days, the latest thing, see into me—into us—clearly or darkly? I hope it does, he thought, see clearly, because I can’t any longer these days see into myself. I see only murk. Murk outside; murk inside. I hope, for everyone’s sake, the scanners do better. Because, he thought, if the scanner sees only darkly, the way I myself do, then we are cursed, cursed again and like we have been continually, and we’ll wind up dead this way, knowing very little and getting that little fragment wrong too.

It's not only ludicrous plot twists, it totally ruins the two books/series that have gone before it as it basically says Dexter only kills people coz he's possessed by some sort of neolithic demon. Tsk!
