Warrafuck does it mean?

I always assumed that when someone said, "I'll get you at the back of six" they mean they'll get you just before 7 o'clock. But it seems that everyone I ask insists that it means just AFTER 6 o'clock, which defies all logic :1eye

Which is it?? I must know these things

I always took it to mean slightly after 6 o'clock. What else can it mean?

Because that's what it means in English (at least locally to these parts).

It is just after 6 o'clock. Anything else is wrong.

Shouldn't the back of six should mean, y'know, the back end of six. Like, I dunno, the back end of a coo, or the back of the bus.

Surely I can't be alone

That's a bit of Scots which threw me on first hearing - first guess was 'anytime after'. Hadn't a clue what time was being mentioned. But I can now assure the OP that 'back of' = 'just after'

If I said the back of six I'd mean no later than half past.

So can anyone explain to me the logic there...I'm genuinely saddened that common sense has been neglected so :(

I don't know where the phrase comes from but I can only assume it's when the hour hand is not in front of 6 but just behind (the back of) it.

Do you mean you take it to mean just before 6 o'clock?

The plot thickens

edit: actually, I think you mean the hour hand. In which case, you may be on to something

You're probably right. Still, despite this possibly being the most one-sided poll ever (even I voted for after 6 by mistake) I'm going to stick religiously to it meaning just before 7, which makes more sense.

Ooooh, you're all just having a laugh, aren't you  Nice one guys, you almost had me for a second

So if 'the back of' means up til about 20 past, why do they call it the back of eight? Surely seeing the back of something is to see the end of it ?

This is a right headfuck folks

If I say the "back of 6" to someone I generally mean about 615-620.

I despise the expression.

'Back of' SHOULD mean just before. If I said the back of 6, then I would mean 5:45 or so. But its a silly, silly expression.

I don't know why it means "just after"; what I do know is that this is what it means.

Say hypothetically that the number 12 was a person, (it doesnt matter what hour it is, im my opinion its based on the minute hand as thats the constant for each hour)

If the minute hand was approaching 12 it could be said to be coming towards it (or in front of it)

Therefore once it has passed 12 it is behind it. i.e the back of it.

easy ja?
