agreed, we didn't 'do' Auschwitz but travelled up to Chenstewova and down to Zakopane on Slovakian border. Zakopane is stunning, it's in Tatra mountains and you can take cable car up mountain and cross border into Slovakia.

We were there for summer hols in 2006, so had full fortnight. Zakopane was a great day out too.

Trzy Kafki is ok if you're looking for mucho cheapo private rooms in very basic hostel-style backpackers accommodation. Under a tenner a night (each) for a twin room.

I would suggest at least a week to "do" Krakow properly. There's no way you can do the "must-sees" in a weekend.

Takes a day to visit Auschwitz properly, and another full day to do the Salt Mine.

Within the city, it'll take another 2-3 days just to do the main attractions.

Riga's not bad for a weekend if you're doing the "couple" thing - they're cracking down on stag do's though

5 Days max, been twice now as the first time was that good so we went back in Nov/Dec 2007. Took all the tours ie Auschwitz/Birkenau, Salt Mines, river trip, mountain trip etc etc. Well worth it if ye ask me. Wee tip for anyone thinking of going to Krakow, if visiting Auschwitz etc, go by train, couple of quid each, dont let them bluff you about entrance fees etc to Auschwitz as its a World Heritage site now and free entry so the trip by train is better. Taxi's are Cheap also but ask your hotel or b n b etc to recommend one.

Infact, this link below will tell you everything ye need to know about Krakow

For 5 days to a week I would suggest somewhere like Lake Garda. Plenty of beautiful towns on the lake and trips to Verona and Venice are easy. Food and drink are excellant too and not too expensive.

Agreed re the tours. We did all 3 "out of town" trips by bus or train - cost us pennies rather than the £20 per person on the tours.

Never used a taxi - tram system took us everywhere in town & local bus goes to the airport for around 50p.

Have booked up for a week in Krakow in June. Managed to get a great looking appartment through holidaylettings.com. Just off the centre and only £350 for the week! We used this site when we went to Barcelona and the appartments there were great as well.

I have also booked a long weekend away to Madrid as part of my girlfriends birthday. Has anyone been here, if so what are the 'must see' things, for the short time we will be there, in April? Going on the Friday through to the Monday.

Swampy's yer man for a bit of Madrid knowledge. ;)

I take it you'd recommend this holidaylettings.com for a Barca trip then? I fancy taking Karen back there for a long weekend. Where in the city was your apartment? Ta. :)
It's my solo party, it's my body, and if I choose to abuse it with my lifestyle and my music
What the f**k! I can't lose! It's my life! Why is it I can't keep you far enough away?

Enjoy Krakow! - I don't think you'll be disappointed

There was a thread about Madrid a wee while back, that should give you a start.

Naples is a wonderful safe city.

It's also a dump.

However, a week on the Amalfi Coast is wonderful (I did 2 weeks). Take in Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri and Positano for the most relaxing week ever. Same goes for Malta with a day trip to Scicily.

If you don't want to relax I'd say a week split betwen Prague and Budapest or even Paris and Brussels.

I found the Thyssen museum better and quiter than the Prado, and went to a cracking indie nightclub on the Friday night, can't remember for the life of me what it's name was though.

If you ask Mr Wee nicely he might give you my book, if not, then the time out guide is cracking for making plans for a whistle stop tour, as they are with most cities tbh.

Whilst travelling back from Dumfries yesterday in the gloom of the rain, thoughts turned to a mini break. Something around the 5 days to a week mark. I fancy Croatia or Serbia, I heard Split & Dubrovnik were nice and have decent weather about the end of May. I also heard Belgrade was quiet nice as well. Poland might also be a consideration.

Has anyone been to the aforementioned places and would they recommend them? Alternatively, recommendations for any other destination outwith the UK will be welcomed as well.

Obviously Vartex will be the man in the know for Croatia. ;)

Sorry, that should now be Vintex.

Try Madrid..."cat " people locals are known as because the City never sleeps..depends on what you though ..Culture..Prada Art gallery..Sport..Footy..cafe society.

I would comsider the States though as the $ is favourable if your wallet can afford it.
Boston is good I hear.I am off to Pittsburgh in April(been a dozen times) and it came top last year in a USA poll as the No1 "overall" place to live.
I would have recommended Malta but it's black or white..you love it or hate it!..you can get cheap flights from manchester
