We're not far away from getting an extra UEFA Cup place and with Rangers and Sellick already guaranteed to add points via the CL groups if Aberdeen can get to the UEFA Groups and get a result or two we could be well set

Anyone know the actual situation?

Well done the Dons.

I don't think finishing 9th will give Hearts European football?

They do get a spot, it's just runners up who no longer get to qualify ;)

Exactly, but we'd see 4th in the SPL get a place too and that would be magic

Two automatic CL berths
One would be nice though
It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going to get better. I've been drowning too long to believe that the tide is going to turn. And I've been living too hard to believe things are going to get easier now. I'm still trying to shake off the pain from the lessons I've learned. And if I see Van Helsing, I swear to the lord I will slay him. AHA HA HA. He take you from me but I swear I won't let it be so. AHA HA HA. Blood, will run done his face, when he is decapitated AH! Yip, it's very much a united front now cos every point counts

Any idea how the co-efficient thing works?

I presume you get more points for winning in the CL than the Yoofa???

I'm sure Celtic got a fair few points for getting to the final a few years ago

The situation is that Scotland need approx 7 coeff pts (14 wins ) more than Holland this season to get 8th place and the extra 2 Uefa cup places. next couple of seasons looks good - other than the Ukraine, most of our competing countries (Portugal, Holland etc) drop off about 3 points a year more than us, meaning our points will be near theirs the season after next :)

I'm pretty sure that Celtic's run to the Waffa Cup final won't count as of next season. The rankings are only taken over a five year period.

It is very difficult to predict the club co-efficients, every match and every scoreline causes variation, there are hundreds if not thousands of matches in the InterToto, UEFA, Champions League and SuperCup competitions every season so you can see why prediction is difficult.

HOWEVER we can take educated guesses. Look at the co-efficient ranking for this season:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/ d.../crank2008.html
And look at what slots you get for each place (to summarise, 8th place and above get 4 UC):
http://www.xs4all.nl...access2008.html
It is very possible, but not guarenteed, that we will have 2 CL, 4 UC + 1 IC in a few seasons. Our clubs still being in after Christmas this season and other countries doing badly, would help.

Unfortunately you are actually at the top of Pot 5, so it will be harder than I thought. See the thread of when the draw is for details. But I'll put a copy of the pots below for you to look at:

Pot 1

Villarreal Esp 78.374
Bayern München Ger 73.64
AZ Alkmaar Ned 63.995
Panathinaikos Gre 55.415
FC Basel Sui 54.869
Girondins Bordeaux Fra 49.706
Bayer Leverkusen Ger 45.64
Anderlecht Bel 41.594

Pot 2

Tottenham Hotspur Eng 40.618
Lokomotiv Moscow Rus 38.92
Zenit St. Petersburg Rus 38.92
Sparta Praha Cze 37.851
AEK Athens Gre 36.415
Hamburger SV Ger 34.64
Bolton Wanderers Eng 32.618
Austria Wien Aut 30.104

Pot 3

Spartak Moscow Rus 27.92
Sporting Braga Por 27.107
Galatasaray Tur 26.791
Atlético Madrid Esp 25.374
Getafe Esp 25.374
Everton Eng 24.618
Fiorentina Ita 21.808
Stade Rennais Fra 20.706

Pot 4

Hapoel Tel Aviv Isr 19.338
Red Star Belgrade Srb 19.256
FC Kobenhaven Den 19.129
Toulouse Fra 17.706
Dinamo Zagreb Cro 17.533
Panionios Gre 16.415
Nurnburg Ger 14.64
Mlada Boleslav Cze 13.851

Pot 5

Aris Thessaloniki Gre 13.415
Aberdeen Sco 11.064
FC Zurich Sui 9.869
AE Larissa Gre 8.415
AaB Aalborg Den 7.129
Sk Brann Bergen Nor 6.509
IF Elfsborg Swe 4.478
Helsingsborg IF Swe 3.478

That said, if Aberdeen could get Braga or Stade Rennais out of Pot 3 at home, and Panionos or Mlada Boleslav away, they could come third. Or would Aberdeen fans prefer Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Toulouse/Red Star Belgrade for the money & glory?

Does anyone know what the system for who you play at home/who you play away is set at?

Countries get two points for a win and one for a draw (in qualifying, you get half of this). The total from each country is divided by the number of clubs from that country taking part. You also get bonus pts at various stages in the compo's.

This year Scotland has
more than they had for the whole of 05/06 and the same as the season before :)

5 wins and a draw and we better the Seville year

From wikipedia:

The league coefficient is used to rank the leagues of Europe, and thus determine the number of clubs from a league that will participate in competitions such as the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

This coefficient is determined by the results of the clubs of the leagues over the past five seasons. The number of points awarded each season (two for each win by a club from that league, one for a draw) is divided by the number of teams that participated for that nation in that season. This number is then rounded to three decimal places (e.g. 2 2/3 will be rounded to 2.667).

For the league coefficient the season's league coefficients for the last five seasons must be added up. In the preliminary rounds of both the Champions League and UEFA Cup the awarded points are halved. Bonus points are allocated for:

- Qualifying for the Champions League group phase. (3 bonus points)
- Reaching the second round of the Champions League.
- Reaching the quarter, semi and final of both Champions League and UEFA cup.
The bonus points are added to the number of points scored in a season.

AT THE CURRENT TIME:
Dunfermline garnered 0.5 points (1 draw).
Aberdeen have to date garnered 2 points (2 draws).
Celtic have to date garnered 6 points (2 draws in qualifying, reaching group, 1 win in group)
Rangers have to date garnered 10.5 points (3 wins 1 draw in qualifying, reaching group, 2 wins in group)

THUS WE CURRENTLY HAVE 19 POINTS DIVIDED BY 4 = 4.750 POINTS

IN THE SEASON ABOUT TO DROP OFF, WE HAD 7.375 POINTS

Thus to match the season Celtic made the UEFA Cup Final, we need 2.625 points. Which put it another way is 10.5 points in club total. Or 5 wins and 1 draw out of 12 group matches remaining (4 for each of our 3 remaining teams). Not including any qualifying for next rounds.

So....if Hibs/Jambos had gone into the ITC then won 2 games and drawn 1 that would have helped increase our co-efficient? (you have to get more that 4 points or you are a nett depreciator)

Plus had they done so, they may have had points from the YOOFAH so adding more points....
bit selfish of the Capital teams.
Why are my Wife's in-laws so much better than mine....

I don't know if InterToto games count currently, they may eventually. ICT actually intended to apply, but withdrew to host an Elton John concert instead. Nice to see the priorities there guys.

Intertoto games and the super cup thankfully don't and won't (ever?) count for the coeff points.

An added bit of interest in us getting 6 Euro places would be that the mid table SPL clubs would be competing for guaranteed entry to Europe prior to the split.

8th place and we'd get 1 CL group stage entry, 1 3rd rnd qualifier and 4 Uefa Cup rnd 1 places - who needs Intertoto?
