Gers opponents fined over racism

Quote

FK Zeta have been fined £9,000 by Uefa after Rangers duo DaMarcus Beasley and Jean-Claude Darcheville were subjected to racist taunts from their fans.

Verbal abuse was aimed at the players during last month's Champions League qualifier in Montenegro.

Home fans also threw bottles on to the pitch and Rangers substitute Charlie Adam was struck by a lighter.

"Personally I think we need to keep Rangers in the SPL. I don't care that fans will be upset with that." - Peter Houston (Dundee United Manager).

Fine should have been much greater, IMO.

I was just thinking that myself. I guess they judged it to be as much as the club could afford?

Yeh, tbh, probably. £9000 I presume is probably a nice round figure in Euros or Swiss Francs and perhaps there is an upper limit.

The problem comes when you are hammering teams with huge fines and competition bans, as that would be enough for an opposition fan to sneak in and do some shouting. I know that's the sort of lame excuse that Rangers were using before, but if the stakes were that high (a UEFA years ban for Rangers, just as an example not suggesting it, could be worth up to £10m to the 3rd placed team if the league finished with the OF top two. Assuming the 3rd place team took the place) you wouldn't put it past a team to perform some underhand tactics.
