No, the league is too Mickey mouse to even deserve consideration from UEFA for this. The SPL Champions should be in the 1st qualifying round, the second place club into the Uefa cup.
Until the SPL becomes a major football player.....no in this lifetime anyways, this is how the setup should work.

I normally disagree with everything you say, but you definately have a point.
Compared to other leagues, the SPL is as mickey mouse as it gets. I'm not sure what we've done to deserve two spots, considering the two spots are decided before the season even starts. Reward the league winners.

Currently, the ranked UEFA nations:
1-3 : 4 CL, 3 UC, 1 IC
4-6 : 3 CL, 3 UC, 1 IC
7-8 : 2 CL, 4 UC, 1 IC
9-15 : 2 CL, 2 UC (Scotland are currently ranked 11)
16-21 : 1 CL, 3 UC, 1 IC
22-53: 1 CL, 2 IC, 1 IC
Exceptions: Liechtenstein have no league, and therefore receive only 1 UC. Andorra and San Marino have leagues with insufficient membership, and therefore receive only 1 CL & 1 UC.
Currently 11th, Scotland get:
- 1:QualifyingR3 and 2:QualifyingR2 in the Champions League
- 1:Round1 and 1:QualifyingR2 in the UEFA Cup
- 1:Round2 in the InterToto Cup
(this would apply up to and including 14th. We drop to 12th next year and 14th year after)
If we rose to 9th (currently Russia) we would get:
- 1:GroupStage and 1:QualifyingR3 in the Champions League
- 1:Round1 and 1:QualifyingR2 in the UEFA Cup
- 1:Round2 in the InterToto Cup
If we rose to 7th or 8th (currently Netherlands and Greece) we would get:
- 1:GroupStage and 1:QualifyingR3 in the Champions League
- 4:Round1 in the UEFA Cup
- 1:Round3 in the InterToto Cup
If we rose to 6th (currently Portugal) we would get:
- 2:GroupStage and 1:QualifyingR3 in the Champions League
- 3:Round1 in the UEFA Cup
- 1:Round3 in the InterToto Cup

If the defending cup holder already qualified directly for the group stage of the Champions League, the champion of the 10th country on the country ranking list will gain direct access to the group stage, the champion of the 16th country on the country ranking list will gain direct access to the 3rd qualifying round, and the champions of the 26th and 27th country on the country ranking list will gain direct access to the 2nd qualifying round. Similar changes are made if the cup holder already qualified directly for one of the qualification rounds.
Scotland were 10th at the end of last season.

Bearing in mind that:
1-2 in Spain, Italy, England, France, Germany, Portugal
1 in Netherlands, Greece, Russia
all gain entry to the CL group stage, there is a reasonable chance one of them will win it.
The exception being Liverpool, who didn't finish in any CL position and had to get special permission to enter in Qualifying Round 1 (since usually no country allowed more than 4 clubs).

I'd prefer to see it go back to the original Champions League when ONLY the league champions got into the competition. Bring back the Cup Winners Cup and make the UEFA Cup the runners up/3rd placed team etc

UEFA would never consider it as it 'wouldn't be profitable enough'. Personally I would like to see this happening (think I mentioned it in a thread months ago) but the basturtin' G14 clubs will bitch and whine about other countries getting a fairer share of revenue and the idea would be dead and buried

I mentioned that years ago, and people aid it wouldn't fly. But it would, the CL has too many teams and not enough champions.

All nations should get one club in the champions league and coefficients should decide UEFA and (the reformed) CWC places (extra CWC places, being league cups etc.)
Numbers are league ranking
1-3 : 5 UEFA, 3 CWC (1 Cup runner up possibly participating)
4-6 : 4 UEFA, 2 CWC
7-8 : 3 UEFA, 2 CWC
9-15 : 3 UEFA, 1 CWC
16-21 : 2 UEFA, 1 CWC
22-53: 1 UEFA, 1 CWC
Another crazy idea I had was a sort of pyramid league network, that would be played as well as domestic leagues. Each league of 8 teams that play each other twice The competition would be decided on the winners of the previous years competition in a lower layer, obviously teams that do well in a league, stay in that league. I do appreciate this would be ridiculously complex and the logistics would be a nightmare.

So you're proposing a European League? Under you're model it requires at least 14 matchdays...

I would like to see only league champions gaining direct entry to the league stage. All other clubs from countries with multiple entries having to qualify.
On the above figures that would give the next six countries one direct entry, and if their 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams are as good as they think they are, they would still come through qualifying. It would also give more national champions an entry into the 'champions league' money spinning stage.
Be nice to see one of any of these 6 country's big teams bogging off to Kazakhstan or the Faroes in a competition instead of swanning about the world playing friendlies and selling jerseys in the middle of July.

I don't believe it would, in my view there's already more chance of the big clubs forming their own competition than there is of reverting to the old ways and I'm partly to blame in that I'd rather watch Spanish runners up Barcelona play Italian runners up Milan than watch the champions of Finland play the champions of Belgium. Sorry.
