Was your family freed from captivity just before you departed for Strathclyde? A more oblivious bunch I can scarcely imagine.

They're actually very clever people. :) However, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to geographical stuff. In that American States thread that was on P&B a couple of weeks ago, I could only name 14 of them. :(

You can't compare St. Mirren to Celtic or Rangers, I'm afraid. :P You would only ever see St. Mirren shirts in, or in the vicinity of Paisley. ;)

As opposed to St. Johnstone shirts, which you would struggle to find in the vicinity of McDairmid Park just before kick off.

 the good old Strathclyde Hilton... Been there a few times as my work provides their AV Equipment...

Though that holiday really sounds shite... But in all seriousness, with the money you spent staying at a Hilton hotel, would you not have been better off fuckin' off on holiday abroad? Me and the misses managed to get a named 3* hotel in Las Americas, Tenerife for £518 from Glasgow for a week in August... Surely 4 nights in the Hilton would top that?

SALTCOATS?

You've never been then?

That was exactly my reaction on reading the earlier list of holiday destinations in Strathclyde - lets face it, the only positive things about that part of Ayrshire are cheap drugs and the Arran ferry. Saltcoats

I can't believe this thread hasn't included mention of the Mull of Kintyre, it's a top holiday place - and its in Strathclyde.

Bump.

Coming back to this thread, I realised just quite how surreal it is.

Let's go to Greece-nah, we'll head over to the nythical kingdom of Strathclyde, where it'll be a laugh?

If this isn't a wind up, I'm going to have a really bad migraine....
ECR leader Jan Zahradil has attacked the decision to go ahead with the House of History project. Speaking in Strasbourg, the Czech member said, "We do not need this. As Europe is losing competitiveness and geopolitical weight, it is becoming a museum anyway."

As some of you may be aware, I have been away for the past three days. For my summer holidays, I went to the Strathclyde Hilton. I advise you to never even think of Strathclyde as a possible holiday destination, as it may well be the worst thing that you've ever experienced in your life.
My mum, dad and I began our journey by going to IKEA in Paisley. Yes, IKEA! In Paisley! I don't know what they were thinking.
Anyway, I spent an hour and a half there trolling around, while my parents searched for a cupboard they wanted. They finally found it, so it was time to go to the checkout. I was almost ecstatic that we were set to leave for the Strathclyde Hilton at last, and thought that things couldn't get possibly worse. I was wrong. While in the queue at the checkout, a little boy in front of me shat his pants. Yes, he literally shat his pants. Everyone nearby basically ran for cover, with their hands over their noses. The place absolutely reeked, and I was very, very close to spewing my load.
Meanwhile, I had unbearable hunger pangs. I hadn't had lunch, so was hoping to get a hot dog at IKEA, but that rank little boy put me off eating anything.
I couldn't get out of that place soon enough, and was looking forward to getting to the Strathclyde Hilton for a nice, relaxing swim.
However, we had to find our car first, in the massive IKEA car park. We spent about half an hour looking for our car before we eventually found it. We then travelled to the Hilton, getting lost on the way of course, with my mum and dad shouting at each other all the way there. It was a nightmare. We finally got there though, with hopes that our holiday would finally take a turn for the good.
Hopes turned to despair when we were told that the pool was out of bounds for the day, because of 'a few little accidents'. Yes, someone had taken a dump in the pool.
I suppose there were a few good points to the holiday. M&D's was decent enough. The food wasn't however. We went to the nearest Brewer's Fayre for tea, and I asked for a burger, which arrived 35 minutes later. It was completely solid. I was very unimpressed, but ate it anyway because I was hungry. I then felt ill for the rest of the night.
So, as much as a holiday to Strathclyde may seem tempting to you, don't go there!

So you had a shite weekend in Strathclyde (literally)? Sounds like it's your own fault, there is plenty to do for a few days in Glasgow rather than go to a Brewers Fayre or Ikea. Perhaps you would have had a better time if you and your family weren't such mongols.

Quite literally:
Mongols!

You should write a report for that Trip Advisor website so no more poor unsuspecting tourists are fooled by the North Lanarkshire Tourism Website.

I've seen a few in Elgin, to be fair. The guy next door from my mum and dad is from Paisley originally and he's St Mirren daft. He's not the only one with a St Mirren shirt I've seen up there though.

I hate to be pedantic but at the risk of alerting CS to this thread - Strathclyde doesn't actually exist anymore.

Is the Strathclyde Hilton an ex-Stakis? Quite a few of the Hiltons in Scotland are, such as the Edinburgh Airport Hilton.

While they're all under the same brand, you can generally tell which is which is a real Hilton and which is an ex-Stakis (briefly Hilton National but now just Hilton, too) based on the decor and sometimes room size.

Most Hilton hotels in this country are very expensive for what you get, but I'll say this for them: their breakfast is absolutely top-notch.

Additionally, while I worked for them I got Hilton stays for 16 quid a night, including breakfast, and I could have meals and drinks for half price (which makes the food reasonable and the drinks cheap.) This was a fabulous arrangement.

Edit: Notwithstanding the fact that you'd need to be an absolute diddy-ride to consider taking your family on holiday to "Strathclyde."

It's like one of those quietly desperate things you see in tourist information brochures for rubbishy wee towns that only make them out of duty. "Why go to Florence when you can visit Wishaw instead?" Why indeed, Mr. Wonder.

And much of modern-day Cumbria. It was conquered by/absorbed into Scotland around the year 1020 or so.

To be honest, I don't really see the problem in going to Strathclyde for a 3 day break. We weren't expecting it to be a haven, obviously. We're not stupid, and my family are definitely not 'mongols'. It was less expensive than a holiday abroad and we only stayed there for 2 nights. We have been there before actually, staying at the Hilton a few years ago, although I can't really remember it.
I suppose it can't really be classed as a holiday, just a bit of a 'getaway' from Perth for a few days, without having to travel too far, and an excuse to go to M&D's, which isn't really that bad!
Anyway, we're trying to book a trip to Lanzarote for the October holidays now, so that should be good.

You and your family may be dissapointed, I'm not sure Lanzarote has a Brewers fayre.
What does a scanner see? he asked himself. I mean, really see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does a passive infrared scanner like they used to use or a cube-type holo-scanner like they use these days, the latest thing, see into me—into us—clearly or darkly? I hope it does, he thought, see clearly, because I can’t any longer these days see into myself. I see only murk. Murk outside; murk inside. I hope, for everyone’s sake, the scanners do better. Because, he thought, if the scanner sees only darkly, the way I myself do, then we are cursed, cursed again and like we have been continually, and we’ll wind up dead this way, knowing very little and getting that little fragment wrong too.

Given that his family decided against a package holiday abroad and instead opted for to trapse around a furniture store then I would sumise that there is a lot the lad has missed out on...

They didn't decide against it - there was no choice! We were either going to go on a cruise, or to Greece, but we couldn't find any good deals. We decided to go to somewhere else in Scotland, which wouldn't take too long to drive to, and seeing as we'd been to the Strathclyde Hilton once before and found no major problems with it at all, it seemed to be the safe option. ;)

Are your parents Artists or Actors, by any chance?

My mate has parents that are both Artists and they do random things like this. They also left dirty dishes in the bath, mind you.

Assuming this isn't one massive wind-up
