Yes but bizarrely it was against St Johnstone!

12th May 1993, Raith won 4-2, in front of 1,473.

Saints side was: Rhodes, Inglis, Deas, McGowne, Cole, Turner, Curran, Davies, Torfason, Byrne, Buglione. Subs: Donegan, McGinnis, McAuley, Moore, Maskrey.

Saints scorers were Torfason and Maskrey.

How often do other clubs end up giving anyone a testimonial?

Andy Aitken is supposed to be having a testimonial year this coming season I think, though it's all gone quiet on that front recently. Jim Thomson will potentially be due one the season after next if he's still here though of course the common misconception that you need 10 years service to get a testimonial is bollocks.

George Rowe got a testimonial season whilst he was with us and had not one but TWO dinners. However, he never had a match. It was intended to have one but he departed the club before one was ever organised and it never actually happened. That would be 99/00.

I can't think who the last player to have a testimonial game with us was? Allan Ball definitely had one in the early 80's against Manchester City but I think maybe George Cloy had a game with Carlisle United after that? Not certain though.

Warren Hawke was the first testimonial for us for a while, and I think he had two dinners as well. Normally I'd baulk at something like that, but Hawke is a legend and a model pro - I was happy to give my support even if he hadn't played anything like ten years for us :)

Same has happened to Andy Lawrie at Falkirk. He had a dinner in November but isn't getting a match.

Dougie Barron had one just before my time, against Rangers, ironically a few months before we actually drew them in a Scottish Cup semi-final. That was in March 1989, after 10 years with the club.

For the record, the Saints side in a 2-2 draw was: Balvage, Mackay, McVicar, Barron, Cherry, Thompson, Maskrey, Coyle, Grant, Brogan, McDonald. Used subs: Butter, Thomson, Irvine, Smith, Sorbie, Jenkins, Heddle, Johnston.

John Mackay, John Brogan and (Kenny) MacDonald guested for Saints. Roddy Grant and John Irvine scored our goals.

In November 1999, Roddy Grant had a game against Premiership Coventry City on the eve of the Scotland vs England match at Hampden. Grant had spent spells with the club between 1988-1992 and 1995-1999.

Coventry sent a good team but Saints won 3-2 thanks to goals from Gerry McMahon, Trialist and Grant (PK). The trialist was Tommy Lovenkrands who was outstanding... and never came close to repeating the same level of performance once he signed! If I didn't know better, I'd say the trialist was actually his brother!

Team: Robertson, McQuillan, Bollan, Weir, Griffin, Kane, O'Halloran, McMahon, Grant, Lowndes, Trialist. Subs: Cuthbert, McCluskey, Preston, Connolly, Simao, O'Boyle, Thomas.

When Allan Preston was forced to retire in 2000, he got a game against Premiership Bradford City, having been with the club since 1994.

Neville Southall was in goal for the Bantams but couldn't prevent Saints winning 4-2 with doubles from Sylla and Lovenkrands. If ever he came close to recapturing the Coventry form, it was in this game!

Team: Cuthbert, McClune, Forsyth, Trialist, Weir, McCluskey, Hartley, Trialist, Kane, Lovenkrands, Sylla. Subs: Findlay, McBride, McCulloch, Bollan, Crozier, Kernaghan, Dasovic.

After 10 years service, Jim Weir was awarded a testimonial in 2004, against Newcastle United, although unfortunately only a reserve team travelled as they were still in Europe. Richard Offiong played for them as did current first teamer Peter Ramage and I'm sure there were several others, although I can't remember them at the moment.

Keigan Parker scored our goal in a 2-1 defeat, one of John Connolly's first games.

Team: Nelson, McQuilken, Maxwell, Fotheringham, Weir, Forsyth, Stevenson, Taylor, Parker, Donnelly, McLaughlin. Subs: Cuthbert, Dods, Malone, Vata, Connolly, Fraser.

Despite being only 24, Kevin Cuthbert will have clocked up 10 years service in a couple of years.

The testimonal committee had wanted Rangers, but Saints came down for nothing, so Dalziel was able to pocket all of the money, instead of having to payout a large whack to the opposition.

Andy Rhodes certainy enjoyed Jackie O's that night.

Davie Hayes didn't get one - the story goes he got a TV or video recorder for his services.

It was - prior to that game a team of St. Mirren fans played a team of older guys (Jackie Copland etc).
The testemonial game itself was notable for our domination of it until late on when McGraw sent on Jim Hunter with a heavily strapped knee. Within 10 minutes it was 3-0 to St. Mirren. <_<
