Thought I'd start a thread on this, no idea if anyone will respond but meh.
Started a new game of this last night, and I'd almost forgotten how good it is. Was only playing for an hour or so, but I'm just about to go on the train to the second Mako reactor. Will play it again tonight, in a couple of hours I'll be at the Shinra Building.
This game is like my TLotR- I play through it every year or so, haven't done so for a while though. Looking forward to it, there's always stuff I miss.

I prefer my memories. I tried replaying it last year but was immediatley bored by the combat and many of the cutscenes.
In any case it's a distant third in the list of top Playstation RPGs after Suikoden 2 and Suikoden 1.

Completely agree with you, I love FFVII. Best game ever.
I play it every now and again but my PS2 is completely knackered form years of abuse.
I think I managed to do everything possible in the game. Beating Omega Weapon and Ruby Weapon was fucking hard though!!!

Do you mean Emerald WEAPON? The underwater one? Can't remember if Omega was in FFVII.
Beating Emerald is the hardest thing I've ever done in any computer game, ever.

Is that the game with the Chocobo Racing at some Golden Tower thing, the RPG equivalent of Blackpool Pleasure Beach?

I heard they were updating the graphics on it. Keeping the same style but making it look sharper and, well, better.
Any truth to this? Not sure if it for PS2 or PS3.

If you look on Youtube or Gamespot, you'll find a Final Fantasy VII "Tech Demo" that is an enhanced remake of the introduction to FFVII, where you see Aerith in the slums, with the camera panning out to show Midgar and then into the railway station at the first reactor.
Looks amazing, but it's only a Tech Demo to show what the PS3 can do. It hasn't been 100% confirmed if there ever will be a remake. Frankly I'm in two minds over whether it would improve it!

aye, Omega was VIII. That b*****d was hard and all.
Emerald was really difficult. Took me about an hour to kill him.
Ruby wasn't as difficult but still really hard. I remember he used to completely wipe out two of your characters and I had to keep on restarting so I would be left with the right one.

Any game that forces a reboot to succeed is not a "challenge" in and of itself.

No, you had three characters and Ruby weapon would destroy two of them early doors (usually), leaving you one character to finish the fight. If you were left with the weaker of the three it was pretty impossible. You needed to be left with your head honcho to kick his c**t in

Well, I've now passed the Shinra Building and defeated Rufus Shinra, played it for another couple of hours last night. So now just about to to Kalm and learn what happened in Nibelheim... man I love this game.

Have you managed to get the master materia when playing before?
God, I feel like a geek and it's damn good

For the record, I thought FF VIII was excellent too. Graphically quite different but I really enjoyed it.

Final Fantasy VIII was great too, but the junctioning system made the game too simple. Plus, the fact that your enemies levelled up as you did meant there was no real reward for levelling your guys up - get all your guys to level 100 and the enemies were no easier than they were when you were at 60, 70 etc.. Plus, the summons were too long (especially Eden) and one thing that always annoyed me was how long it took the game to refresh from one area to the next!

Yes, exactly. It just becomes a crapshoot, unless you had the foresight to level up to 99 beforehand or something

Final Fantasy VII was just the best RPG I ever played. Im not normally into RPGs, but I played this game for weeks on end and still go back to it sometimes now. Plus Aries was the first computer game character I can recall fancying....

Edited to say:
I never completed the game, spent all my time playing games at Gold Saucer!

The only three games that have ever come close to FFVII are FFX, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Have you played FFX-2 or FFXII?

Not played FFXII yet (got it on pre-order though) but played and completed FFX-2, alright, but not brilliant.
Keep them on the Warrior dressphere and they'll level up enough not to need any potions or anything like that ever, even during the final boss!

Without a shadow of a doubt, Final Fantasy VII is the greatest game of all time. The others in the series that I've played (VIII - X) don't even come anywhere close to matching it. I was ten when I first played it, and cried with Aeris died.
I was given the guide to the game by a mate after he completed it, and although I defeated Emerald Weapon (I struck lucky with Cait Sith's ultimate limit break), Ruby Weapon was nigh on impossible to defeat.
There's 100 parts of the game that are infinetely cool, but probably the best part is right at the start when you're stuck in Midgar, there's something very sleazy and sexy about it.
I'm feeling all romantic now, I think I might buy it for my PS2. Can you save PSOne games onto a PS2 memory card?

No, but you can buy a PS1 memory card and use that. Most games stores (EB games etc) will have used ones for about 5quid i would think.
(all of the above are atleast correct in the US.)
