SLab might support independence?

Just saw an Guardian article on twitter that suggests Labour might support independence:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jun/25/sturgeon-seeks-urgent-brussels-talks-to-protect-scotlands-eu-membership

In a further significant development, Scottish Labour’s executive committee opened up the prospect of eventually endorsing independence after agreeing to “consider all options†on Scotland’s future in the UK.
Until now, the Scottish Labour leader, Kezia Dugdale, had consistently opposed a second referendum, but the party is now to consult unions, parliamentarians and members on its position after the UK as a whole voted to leave the EU. Party officials said the political situation was so fluid and uncertain, it was impossible to arrive at a fixed position now on Scotland’s future.

Dugdale said Scottish Labour believed in the UK and pooling resources and sovereignty, but it now had to apply those values “to do the best thing for Scotland and the interests of working people within itâ€.

Never thought I'd see the day etc etc...

With Labour being in disarray, maybe Dugdale feels she can assert her authority a bit up here. I think a lot of people feel that leaving the EU is a bit of a deal breaker in terms of the Union.

Wonder if anything will change Ruth Davidson's mind as well. But like turning water into wine mind...

At the very least it suggests SLab are afraid of losing members and some of their elected officials due to Brexit and see adopting this posture as a way to keep them on board until passions have calmed down a bit.

Scottish Labour should give up. They are an absolute joke and god knows why anyone in the media listens to a word they say. Complete irrelevance.

My word. They were dictating the debate little over a year ago apparently ;):P

Labour need to back yes. It's their only chance to save face imo.

Labour have missed their chance to go for independence. A switch to pro independence will just mean they lose more ground to the tories - they've probably lost all the seats they could to the Tories but it might mean Tory wins in snp/ Tory marginals.

We could be independent before another GE or SPE is held though so they will be in a stronger position to reform into a post-Indy social Democratic Party, possibly with St. Nic as leader?

They'll probably be neutral, with quite a few figures quietly supporting independence. As weird as it sounds, at this point it's almost just handy for another endorsement; I can't think of anyone within Scottish Labour's whose transition would be massive if it weren't for them being aligned to the party. Some like Jabba the Hutt will be staunch No's but some with very pro-EU feelings are bound to come over.

Ask a member of the public where SLAB stand on any issue of your choice and the most likely reply is, "ah dinna ken". Closely followed by, "ah dinnae care".

If I was running Scottish Labour strategy I'd be tempted to draw a line in the sand here

Make it quite clear to Westminster that if they don't ignore this referendum then Scottish Labour are going to give up trying to keep this Union going and the United Kingdom is over

Giving Conservative MPs the choice of leaving the EU or burning the Union Jack is liable to be enough of an excuse for Westminster to do the right thing but Scottish Labour can claim the credit for having actually achieved something, they could become relevant again.

Of course if Westminster persist in leaving the EU anyway then Scottish Labour probably weren't going to be able to stop the SNP anyway under those conditions.

Erm, Jeremy Corbyn runs Scottish Labour. It being the financially dependent branch office of the Labour Party in the UK. So yeah: independent action or initiative is really not going to happen.

I did say in a different thread that Slab supporting indy would be a game changer for Scotland and possibly kick the arse out of the SNP.

Scottish voters are essentially progressive socialists and the SNP are not  that.

If SLab had backed indy 1st time around then Scotland would already be Independent.
